Over the past two decades, I have engaged in countless conversations with folks who are thinking about breaking up long-term relationships, quitting their jobs or constantly searching for new jobs, getting a new car, moving to a new-town, getting another tattoo (and another tattoo and another tattoo) and so on and so forth.
It seems that there is a pervasive cultural illusion that joy, peace, and an endless stream of HAPPINESS is always somewhere else or with someone else.
Baked into our cultural ethos is this assumption that no matter what you have or who you have it with, things are probably better somewhere else. Or with someone else.
And honestly, that may be true.
But before you break up, quit, move, or numb out through buying, hiding, or running, remember...
When you cross the finish line, you will still be you.
When you hold hands with someone new, you will still be you.
When you walk in the door of your new apartment, the reflection in the mirror will still be you.
Before you cut and run, ask yourself if you are whole. Ask yourself if you are contributing to your own misery. Be honest with yourself and ask if part of the problems in your life might be with how you are choosing to move through space.
Wherever you go, I want you to carry with you core tenants of dignity, laughter, and worthiness.
The crazy thing is, when you KNOW and OWN these things deep inside your being, you will often find love, peace, enough, and belonging right where you are standing.
When we’re whole, the grass has a way of greening up right under our feet.
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train,
