Horst Architects Horst Architects Each project celebrates the unique aspect of program, client and site to arrive at design solutions which are original and distinctive.

The architecture explores the contrapuntal aspect of human nature through the creation of space which is both sheltering and expansive, communal and intimate, permanent and ephemeral. We adhere to the principal ethos of modernism, stripping away the extraneous and be somewhat reductive. This approach leads to a poetic use of space, characterized by the sculptural interplay of light, material and form.

The Obagi Skin Care Institute in Laguna Beach, California is a medical, retail and educational facility, founded by Dr. Zein Obagi from Beverly Hills. His aim was a building to be of our time, to be inclusive of the science and technology available to us, rather than adapt a nostalgic approach architectural style. Given the limited space available on the site, the interior and exterior spaces would need to be flexible to accommodate a variety of needs and services.

The forms and material of the building were informed by Dr. Obagi's desire for the building as a metaphor of what goes on within.

Two principal walls of silver travertine organize the interior and exterior spaces while also reflecting the subtle, corporeal contours of the skin. Natural light enters the interior spaces through continuous fissures where these walls meet the ceiling planes. The continuous dance of light and shadow on the stone walls creates what Le Corbusier once described as "correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light”.

The choice of materials reflects an interest in both sustainability and timelessness.

Introducing MOD-4, our modular, pre-fabricated structure designed for sustainable living in tropical environments. Eco-friendly building components are shipped as a kit-of-parts to the site by ground, air, or sea transport.
Simple and efficient building components allow this structure to be assembled on site, in a relatively short amount of time. Designed to sit lightly upon the earth to minimize disturbance to the natural terrain, the structure is elevated above 4 in-situ concrete columns. The lower level contains the living component, which includes a kitchen, dining, and living area and a service core consisting of a bath and mechanical/storage space. This level is accessed by a retractable stair concealed in the underside of the floor. The upper level is a sleeping loft.
The total floor area is approximately 840 square feet and the total cost of the construction is expected to be under $125,000.

Wanted to share one of our latest projects, The Hollywood House, which is currently in construction.
This project is a 10,000 SF new house for an art collector and film aficionado. The building is oriented laterally on a hill above Hollywood commanding spectacular views from all rooms, spanning the Los Angeles skyline to the ocean. To better integrate the interiors with the pool and views, custom fabricated Vitrocsa doors recede into the floor from the cantilevered roof, accentuate the feeling of flying above the city below. Programmatic elements include a gourmet kitchen, a glass wine tower, 16-seat theater, game room, multiple guest suites, and a 12-car garage.

This project is a complete renovation of an existing 12,600 SF residence in Brentwood for a film producer, his wife, and a growing family. The renovation introduces a strong linear wall that separates public from private space and provides structural support to allow for large openings that eliminate visual barriers between the modern interiors and lush grounds. The interiors are highlighted by light coming through a large skylight – creating a wonderful diffuse light to view the client’s extensive art collection. Other programmatic elements include louvered outdoor spaces, a guest “casita”, a 12 seat screening room, professional gym, office, a floor-to-ceiling glass wine tower, monolithic spiral stair and a playroom for the children.

Currently in construction, our Malibu House is a remodel and addition to a beachfront house in Malibu originally designed in 1969 by the celebrated mid-century architect, Edward Fickett, FAIA.

This residence responds directly to the owner's brief for a relaxed family beach house.

The design process evolved into one of archaeology, carefully stripping away extraneous elements that over time were added to Fickett’s modernist design aesthetic. Once the unadorned structure was revealed, we understood the meaning and intent of Fickett’s design, walls of solidity and transparency around a central courtyard, balancing view with privacy while also blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior space. Searching for connectivity within the natural colors and textures of the site, we found rock formations wherein the action of surf and tide created perforated patterns. This led us to investigate draping the existing structure in a similar perforated skin composed of reinforced concrete. This perforated skin both ties the structure to the site, while also providing privacy and an orchestration of light.

The resulting design honors the work of Edward Fickett, FAIA, fulfills the rigorous requirements of the client and engages in a passionate and robust dialogue with the site.

This past week, in celebration of Valentine's Day, we shared additional concepts of work in progress for on our new Instagram account . Architecture and design are an iterative process and Horst Architects have designed multiple concepts for well established jewelry store Nathan Alan at South Coast Plaza, in Costa Mesa, California. Each concept presents a weaving of transparent, opaque and porous elements providing passersby with a unique series of visual experiences.

Horst Architects have designed a new residence in Monarch Bay which resonates with the mid-century history of this coastal community. Two volumes, one communal and the other intimate intersect around a central courtyard. The integration of interior and exterior space is achieved by concealed doors, folding volumes and a seamless continuity of materials. The forms of this design balance view with privacy, shelter with expansiveness. Materiality is tactile, an allusion to the colors and textures that are prevalent at this coastal site.

This 8,000s.f. duplex for an oceanfront site in San Clemente, California represents an interplay of light, material and form that alludes to it’s coastal setting. The central feature of the design is a central, walled courtyard providing light and air to the interior spaces. An integration of interior and exterior space is achieved with sliding doors concealed in pockets and the continuity of materiality. The simplicity of form and material speak to the immutability of modernism.

The design explores contrapuntal relationships between form and materiality. The new entertainment space is contained within a steel and glass box, suspended weightlessly above the earthbound base of the existing single- level structure. A predominant skin of silver travertine slab reinforces the gravitas of the existing structure. This juxtaposition clarifies the intersection between the new and existing structure.
