How Heavy Rain Can Affect Your Septic System

Too much rainfall can cause your septic tank to fill with water leaving no room for waste to exit. This can cause sewage back ups inside your home leaving behind unsanitary conditions.

A soaked yard can also prevent your drain field from emptying properly. Water-soaked soil blocks the perforated pipe holes, keeping waste from being absorbed as it is intended.

Do Septic Systems Require Maintenance?

In more rural areas where public sewer sytems may not be available or where properties sit far from the road, septic systems are installed to manage household waste. These systems do require maintenance to extend the life of the system. We recommend the following:

Pumping the septic tank every 2 years will ensure decomposed solid waste is removed to keep the tank clean and ready to do its job of treating solid and liquid waste.

Clearly mark the drain field that houses perforated pipes to drain wastewater. Be certain no heavy loads access this area which could crush and damage the buried pipes. Check the pipes for clogs and damage yearly.

Avoid using harsh chemicals to clear clogs in your plumbing system. These toxic chemicals eventually end up filtering through the drain field soil and can land in your groundwater supply.

There is nothing worse than soaking in a nice hot tub only to discover the water is slow to empty when you open the drain. Here are 3 common drain issues to be aware of that indicate a plumbing problem.

A slow-to-empty drain may be the result of narrowing pipe interiors due to the accumulation of corrosive materials. Hard water contains minerals such as calcium and magnesium that can destroy the drain pipe lining and block the flow of water.

Hair, oily bath products, and bath bombs can cause drain pipes in bathtubs to become clogged. The oily products coat the interior of the drain and acts as a magnet to catch loose hair until a blockage forms.

A third issue affecting tub drains is small toys that accidentally become lodged in the drainpipe. Putting a screen over the drain opening can help with this issue.
