Autumn olive may look attractive, especially when it's covered in fragrant spring blooms, but it's one of the most aggressive invasive shrubs in Michigan. Learn to identify it by its silvery leaf undersides and take action before it spreads thousands of seeds through its berries.

Edible landscaping is all the rage - and why wouldn’t it be?! Decorative plants that can help feed your family, sign me up! There are SO many awesome native plants to use in edible landscapes, and American Hazelnut might be one of our favorites!

This hardy native shrub typically grows 8–12 feet tall and wide at maturity, forming a dense thicket that provides excellent habitat and cover for birds and other wildlife. In late summer and fall, it produces edible hazelnuts that can be enjoyed by both people and wildlife alike.

American Hazelnut is a great choice for naturalized landscapes, privacy screens, property borders, food forests, and native hedgerows. Its deep root system also helps stabilize soil, making it useful on slopes and other erosion-prone areas.

Our American Hazelnuts are currently available in 3-gallon containers and stand approximately 3 feet tall, giving you a great head start toward establishing a productive native shrub.

Order online at brightlanegardens.com/shop-plants or shop in person during our Native Plant Sale June 18–21!

Wild Columbine is one of the first native wildflowers to bloom each spring, lighting up woodland edges and shady gardens with its unique red and yellow flowers. Not only is it beautiful, it’s also an important nectar source for hummingbirds, bumblebees, and other early-season pollinators. A perfect choice for adding color and ecological value to part-shade landscapes.
