As most of you already know..... the 'Other House' has been taken off the market. We've decided to keep the old girl. I'm sure my husband jinxed any prospects by not really wanting to sell anyway. We're considering sharing the Other House by way of VRBO. So if you're looking for a nice get away to beautiful downtown Lake Mills Wisconsin, just let me know....

The side porch was in really bad shape, literally falling away from the house. And, our new porch, isn't it lovely!

Simply put: The American Foursquare was a post-Victorian style popular from the mid 1890's to the late 1930's. It shared many features with the Prairie architecture pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright. The boxy foursquare shape provided roomy interiors for homes on small city lots. The simple, square shape also made the Foursquare style especially practical for mail order house kits from Sears and other catalog companies.

I am unsure if our foursquare is a mail order or 'kit' house. It has all of the features that a true foursquare would have but I have yet to find our exact floor plan. I'll post pics a little later of our first project.... the brewery in the basement!

Well, I stand corrected. As I've just learned from a local historian (here on FB) that the house was actually built in 1912. Our realtor said 1908, the next door neighbor said 1910 and the deed said nothing. HA! Thanks Robin for knowing all things Lake Mills! I feel happy to know that we acquired the home on her Centennial Anniversary!!

We took ownership of the house in October of 2012. Our first priority.... a Halloween Party, of course!

I've decided to create a page to document the restoration of our 'other' house. As most of you know, Lane and I bought this lovely 1908 American Foursquare in October 2012 in hopes of using it as an office for Lane, a studio for me, and a place to store our boat. We've really fallen in love with this house and want to bring it back to its former glory. While we don't have far to go (most of the original details are still present) it certainly needs some love. So follow me as we pour all of our love ($) into this house! It's been quite an adventure thus far and I'm sure there will be more to come.
