Hello March 🌈 🍀
It's time to Mark Your Calendars…

March always carries a little energy of its own. Between longer days, hints of spring, and yes… a little St. Patrick’s Day luck 🍀… it feels like the perfect time to lean into momentum.

Here’s what’s happening in the IDS Portland community this month:

🍀 March 10 Chapter Meeting
🍀 March 12 CEU (virtually and in-person)
🍀 March 19 @1-3pm Office Hours
🍀 March 24 @11-1pm Lunch n Learn
🍀 March 25 National Virtual Chapter Mtg
🍀 And a few special moments we can’t wait to share

Be sure to head to our website (link in our bio above) for full details, registration links, and location information — and keep an eye out throughout the month as we highlight each event individually.

March Tip for Our Design Community:
Instead of waiting for luck, create it.

Reach out to one past client, vendor, or industry partner this month just to reconnect — no agenda, no pitch. A simple check-in strengthens relationships, and strong relationships are what build lasting businesses.

Sometimes the most impactful opportunities aren’t lucky — they’re intentional.

We’re looking forward to seeing you this month.

Our next chapter meeting is coming up!

This month, we’ll explore the intersection of art and interior design—how designers can confidently curate, source, and sell artwork as part of their services.

We’ll be joined by Kendra Roberts, Director of Public Engagement at Blackfish Gallery, who will share:

🎨 How to collaborate effectively with galleries
🎨 Best practices for selecting and sourcing art for clients
🎨 How designers can position artwork as a valuable component of their design offering
🎨 Insights into the artists featured in the gallery’s March exhibition
🎨 The role of art in enhancing client experience and elevating project storytelling

This is a fantastic opportunity to deepen your understanding of the art-buying process, strengthen local creative partnerships, and gain fresh inspiration from the work of Portland-based artists.

Be sure to register for this incredible opportunity.

📆 Tuesday, March 10th at 9am
📍 Blackfish Gallery

What a meaningful evening at IDS Portland last night✨

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible host, PDX Estates Marketplace, and to our thoughtful panelists— for leading such an engaging and eye-opening conversation.

From strategic deconstruction and thoughtful demo practices to sourcing vintage and creatively repurposing materials, each of you reminded us that great design isn’t just about what’s new—- it’s about what’s possible!

We walked away inspired to look at materials differently, to reduce waste more intentionally, and to continue shaping a design industry that values both beauty and responsibility.

Thank you for sharing your expertise so generously with our community ♻️♻️♻️

✨ IDS Portland Office Hours | Inaugural 2026 ✨

What a way to kick off the year.

We gathered for our first IDS Office Hours of 2026 at The Star in the Pearl, and it was one of those afternoons that reminds us exactly why community matters.

So many new faces. So many good conversations. We talked about our paths into the industry, the businesses we’ve built (and are still building), and big next steps—like one of our new members opening a showroom and navigating what it takes to franchise, hire well, and train thoughtfully.

We dug into what designers really look for when we walk into showrooms with our amazing vendor partners, how to support and harness the energy of new grads, and how much we all learn just by being in the same room together.

And because this is Office Hours… the conversation also went delightfully off the rails. Pets. Kids. Neighborhoods. Where we want to go on future showroom visits. And yes—chickens wearing pants 🐔👖 (please Google it if you haven’t yet… you’re welcome).

There was a lot of laughter, genuine networking, and some really meaningful connections made—and that’s IDS at its best. Open, supportive, curious, and just a little unhinged in the best way.

Already can’t wait for the next one 💛

Our October chapter meeting… What a night!

Nearly 45 members of Portland’s design community gathered at BASCO Appliances in Lake Oswego for an inspiring and information-packed evening.

Guests rotated through three lively discussion sessions led by experts across the design-build world:

✨ Alan Pierce & Molly Switzer shared insights into the designer–builder relationship and how thoughtful collaboration shapes successful projects.

🔧 Brian Kerr of BK Crownline offered a fascinating look into the appliance installation process—reminding us how vital it is to bring installers into the conversation early to ensure seamless coordination with cabinetry and contractors.

🪵 Michael Ortolano of PDX Woodworks discussed master craftsmanship and setting realistic expectations for custom millwork.

🏗️ Cascadia Remodeling & Construction wrapped up the night by sharing strategies for stronger communication and collaboration between contractors and designers.

A huge thank you to BASCO Appliances for hosting us with a beautiful fall-themed spread and for being such a generous partner to our local design community.

It was an evening full of learning, laughter, and collaboration — exactly what IDS Portland is all about!

Next up: December 9th Holiday Party🌲

Who knew Office Hours could feel this much like the break room we actually want to hang out in?

Our October Office Hours — designers swapping project ideas, chatting kitchen and bath remodels, stained glass doors, Caribbean getaways, and plenty of IDS collaboration talk in between bites and laughs.

Basically, if it was on your mind, it was on the table.

If you haven’t joined us yet, consider this your invitation! Office Hours is our version of a mid-day creative coffee break — casual, unfiltered, and full of real conversations that spark ideas and connections (and occasionally vacation envy).

No agenda. No pressure. Just good company, good conversation, and maybe your next great idea.

Check our website calendar for what’s to come! We hope to see you there!

✨ Common pain points (and how to solve them)
✨ What makes great partnerships thrive
✨ Communication styles + tools that keep projects running smoothly
