USDA has issued their new plant hardiness map. Here's a little food for thought for growing citrus. It’s not as easy as what zone are you in? Notice that 8a goes all the way up into North Carolina. If you are located in Growing Zones 9 to 11 then planting in the ground is an option but if you are located in zones 4 to 7 it is recommended that you plant your citrus trees in a pot so you are able to take them indoors during frigid weather. Zone 8 is the one on the fence. There are times of the year that it is too cold outside, but with good cold protection, you might can make it work. All citrus can be damaged from freezing temperatures, so you have to keep that in mind when you decide to plant and when choosing varieties. Extended periods of cool weather prior to a freeze may allow a citrus tree to prepare somewhat. This is why sharp freezes following warm weather are more damaging than gradual temperature changes. However, virtually all freezes will cause damage of some kind.

Avoid only covering the foliage. This is not effective.
