The Red Sealing Wax palm tree, or Lipstick palm tree, is named for its distinctive, deep-red crownshaft. It is common in many areas in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, Borneo, and Sumatra. However, is not seen very often in Florida. Despite its rarity in Florida, this tree does well in USDA Zone 11, thriving in full sun and consistently moist soil. Consider taking the time to hunt down this palm tree if you want to capture the unique tropical feel of Southeast Asia.

One of the easier trees to pick out while walking through the hardwood forests of the Appalachians, the tulip poplar has distinctive tulip-blossom shaped leaves and a large and extremely showy flower that we’ve been finding, usually in pieces, along the footpath after a rain. These trees grow as far south as Central Florida, with the southernmost stands of tulip poplars found at Spring Hammock Preserve in Longwood and Wekiwa Springs State Park in Apopka. Eastern hemlock is a graceful native evergreen tree. This conifer is unusual in that the terminal leader often droops instead of giving the tree a typical pointed top like that of most trees in the pine family. The 5/16 to 9/16 inch needles are flat and green above with white, shallow, bands on the underside. They are attached with slender stalks and have a flattened, rather than spiral, appearance on the branch. It takes twenty to forty years for the tree to begin seed production. Flowers are produced in spring with cones ripening in the fall and releasing seed during the winter. Although slow growing, a tree can attain a height of 160 feet and trunk diameter of 6 to 7 feet.

The Common Chokecherry tree is Native to most of the continental U.S., including Utah, and to much of Canada. Large shrub to small tree, usually with a multi-stemmed habit. Likes fairly moist locations with rich soils, but will do well on poorer sites. Shade intolerant. Attractive flowers and small size potentially make it a useful tree. Good for wildlife habitat plantings and windbreaks, and fruit can be used in jams and jellies. Black knot disease reduces attractiveness and vigorous sucker-sprouting can be a problem.

Like apples, pears are incredibly well suited to Tennessee climates. Growing in USDA Zones 4-8, pear trees need that cooler weather for the fruit to set. During the growing season, they appreciate the warmth too and thrive in mild, temperate zones. Pear trees are incredibly adaptable.

The katsura tree, native to Japan, makes an excellent specimen or shade tree in Midwestern landscapes. Its foliage offers an array of color throughout the year. In spring, heart-shaped leaves emerge reddish-purple, changing to blue-green as they mature. In autumn the color display changes again as leaves turn a clear yellow or apricot color.
