AUTOMATIC POND DRAIN TIP
Here in S. Florida....It downpours out of nowhere and power outages are common. I installed a DC marine 2000 gph pump along with a marine float switch hooked up to a Marine deep cycle battery. Now, when it Rains heavily, I don't have to worry about overflowing the pond OR panic if the power goes out-I also have a hose running from my well pump into the pond. When the sprinklers come on, it not only tops off the pond.....It also does AUTOMATIC water changes!!!

Preparing your pond for a major storm?????
Especially here in Florida, it is crucial to keeping your little finned friends safe and secure.
Drain your pond water level down to allow for excessive rainfall.
Make sure your overflow is functioning properly. It is a good idea to have a 12 volt marine pump on hand and ready to go in case of a power failure....During the last hurricane, I sunk an old large dog crate with concrete blocks on top of it, giving our Koi a safe, secure place to hide....

Can I over filter my pond????
Recently, I found an amazing Koi farm near our home. Who can resist adding more of these beautiful little creatures?
My pond is about 1800 gallons, I originally fabricated a skimmer with a 2650 gph pump and 4ooo gallon pressure filter with an inline 55 watt uv light. The pond was very clear.....but not crystal clear. I then added a 4200 gph pump in the pond's deepest point, running to an additional 4000 gallon pressure filter. The water is being turned over approx 4 times per hr!!
I believe that the more filtration you have, the more fish you can safely keep...I also make it a practice to do 25% water changes TWICE a week. COMMENTS????

The battle against PEA SOUP {green water, Single cell algae} I have never had green water until now. So far.....I have shaded the pond with a tarp, added polyester batting to filtration, added water hyacinths and upgraded to a 55 watt uv lamp. I will keep you updated on the progress.........I would expect that the water will be crystal clear in 3-5 days..

Plants or no plants??? Living in S. Florida, the lakes are filled with water hyacynths free for the taking! I like to cover half my pond with them.Fish love to mate, play in them and eat the roots.As I have said before....I do not use chemicals!!!!! These plants provide shelter, shade , provide oxygen, filtration and reduce the presence of algae! Try it....FREE!!!!!🎶

Pond Advise!!!! NEVER, NEVER,NEVER leave your pond unattended while topping off the water level!!!! I have heard too many horror stories of experienced pond keepers who were distracted by phone calls etc, while topping off their ponds. There have been many instances where keepers have litarally killed all of their fish, some of which they have had for 20 years! This is due to high levels of chlorine in the water. Younger fish are generally more affected by this. Although I do not typically use chemicals, I strongly suggest that you keep a bottle of dechlorinator on hand at all times. If you realize that you have added too much chlorinated water, IMMEDIATELY add dechorinator. This may help the situation. I do not claim to be a scientist or fish expert . This blog is merely intended to pass on knowledge that I have aquired from many years of experience.

Pond Tip of the week....I believe weekly water changes are essential to maintain a healthy environment for your fish. Heck, would you leave a glass of water out for a week and drink it??? Fish will stay healthier,eat better and grow faster. I hate to quote this BUT....fish live in their own toilet!! 25% water changes will help to keep ammonia levels safe, especially in a new pond .
