All of my plants are fully grown and ready for a new home. This is a good time to plant.

I finally changed the editing system on my Wordpress website from Classic to Block and added my Welcoming Wildlife articles to it. These are 50 articles that I wrote monthly for the Palm Beach Post from 2004 to 2008. See meadowbeautynursery.com

Saw our first hummingbird of the season Sept. 7, 2022

This is April 17, 2021 and Donna and I walked the 2.5 acre yard at 9am. We saw more birds here than we usually do on a five hour walk at one of our local state parks.

Birds included prairie, black and white, parula and palm warblers. Also, redstarts, white eyed vireos, catbirds, cardinals, blue jays, rabbits, swallow tailed kites and a fish crow.

I don't get why my neighbors are still in love with their grass.

Just one reminder. Native plants take longer to establish than the fast growing exotics they compete with. Once established, they require less maintenance and are more beautiful, long lived and attractive to beneficial wildlife.

If your plants look wilted and are turning yellow, it is the soil. Just dig next to the plant's roots and you will see dry soil. Build a round berm of soil around the base of the plant to hold water in place when you water. Please fertilize on schedule.

It may take as much as a year to establish some plants if you live where the soil is dry and has little nutrients. Areas east of I95 were once scrub. So don't give up and plant clusia or ficus, just keep up with the watering two to three times a week and back off to nothing if the plants don't begin to wilt.

This is a small corner lot in Lake Worth planted by Kristi Moyer. She has created a Florida Keys themed planting that makes her yard seem endless. Her two year old son has a great time exploring the paths for bugs and birds and will never be exposed to insecticides.

No! you can't just go away for five months and expect your landscape to look great when you return.

Have you noticed the lack of bumblebees this year? This is a picture of southern beebalm without any bumblebees on it. I have seen some recent articles about how these once common pollinators are disappearing from their southern ranges and this seems to be true in South Florida.
Such a shame.

This is the first year that I didn't have a battle with the squirrels. I made a painted bunting feeder of 1" by 2" rabbit hutch wire with a downward opening door and put it firmly on a 4 by 4 post. The birds can get in, yet the squirrels and larger birds can't. The white millet goes in a dish which is removed at night to prevent rats and under it is screening and hardware cloth. If the buntings are having trouble getting in, try pinching every pair of wires a bit to create a larger opening every other hole. Just buy a roll of 12 inch wide by 25 feet long cage wire and some clips. I cut a four foot length, fold it in half, open it and fold it to the center and open again to make a box. Then make the top and bottom, cut out an opening and make a door for it. The clip for the door is made from wire. Just wrap around your finger once and bend it out and then in to make a U shape with one more inch at a right angle. Bend a J at the end to catch the top of the cage. Pinch the J at the bottom onto the top of the door and you can latch with one hand.
