I've fertilized a lot of the cycads that are showing damage, and now it's time to start cutting the brown leaves off. I noticed one of the apecies on the female Dioon edule was pushing a big flush, so I cut all the leaves off this year. I haven't stripped them down like this since the worse freeze events we had around 2010. This can be a painful endeavor with standard nursery shears, but I didn't get poked once using a Fiskars Pruning Stik. I have used these for about 30 years. They are a godsend when trimming a big Encephalartos ferox. The shears on the end cut very well and the head angle can be adjusted if needed. Instead of having to grip hard to cut something, you only have to pull down the slide. If anyone here in the palm society remembers Hersh Womble, I gave him one of these and he almost cried when he tried it out for the first time. He hadn't been able to use standard shears for a couple of years because of his arthritis. If you need to be farther away from what you are cutting, you can pull the k**b at the end of the stik to activate the shears. I pulled out a new one to use in the pictures. It's great being able to the the leaves on the offsets without having to bend over. If you pull the slide a little, but not enough to cut through the leaves, it's great for picking up pointy leaves and placing them out of the way.
So for those who haven't seen these plants, they are very old Dioon edule plants that were brought into Miami in 1933 by the man who founded Fairchild Gardens. The long stem on the larger plant may be as old as 440 years. The smaller female is about 150 younger than the male. If any serious collector, or botanical garden wants to have this pair in your garden, they are for sale and this is a perfect time to move them. Besides the two gardens in Miami, I don't know of any other botanical garden in the world that has a Dioon edule the size of the male.
Here at The Cycad Jungle, it's business as usual. Certain cycads did get damaged but it's unlikely someone would be wanting to buy these particular plants. Several were Encephalartos plants with large multifoot long stems that only sell every once in a while to the right buyer. My place is by appointment only, but I'm available most days of the week. For anyone thinking about coming our to buy cycads, or Dyckias for that matter, for anyone who spends more than $1000 on plants in April or May, I'll give you a brand new Fiskars Pruning Stik. I just found 8 new ones still in their shipping boxes the other day. 😃

I have picked all my seeds for this year. So far, I have not pollinated any cones for seeds next year. This will most likely be the last year I have good numbers of seeds. I'm hoping to sell the collection. Today I float tested all the seeds and threw out the floaters, and have exact numbers available. At the end of this post I'm going to make an offer I've never done before after 30 years of selling seeds.
I have 159 Ceratozamia hildae seeds. This is my favorite cycad. It may be the most cold hardy cycad in the world. It looks like bamboo but stays controlled in size compared to real bamboo. All seeds are sold with a minimum of 20 and are $2 each.
I've picked the rest of the brown emergent Zamia from Puerto Rico. These are a brown emergent form of what people called Zamia amblyphylidia, and now, erosa. This is a very rare plant unless you have bought these seeds from me before..I have 110, these are $3.50 each.
I just picked my Zamia variegata seeds. It is a tall, upright growing Zamia with very few leaves. It is the only naturally growing variegated cycad, having small yellow spots on the leaflets. The concentration of spots varies from plant to plant and even leaf to leaf on the same plant. It is not as cold tolerant as these Caribbean Zamias. I have 199 and they are $2.25 each
A friend of mine brought in some seeds of a Jamaican Zamia that was not known in cultivation in the US. It had leaves that were five and a half feet long. The leaflets are thin like Zamia portoricensis. It has not been described yet so the name is just the Jamaican giant. I have 295, and these are $2.25 each.
37 years ago I found a special coontie in a nursery. It looked like the Palatka Giant with thicker leaflets. I eventually found our that these grew better in places like Phoenix because they tolerated that kind of heat much better than regular coontie. I call these the Stiff upright coontie. I have 555 seeds and these are $0.80 each.
If you are wanting seeds shipped out of the US, our postal service does not insure delivery once the package leaves the US. Once I send your tracking number, I'm finished. If the package doesn't get delivered, I'm not replacing seeds or refunding any money. Only one package has been lost in transit in close to 30 years, but I still have to give this warning. If this is not acceptable, which I understand if it's not, do not request seeds. I'd much rather stay with shipping within the US, if possible. If things are the same as last year, European countries are not allowing any kind of seeds coming from the US.
Everyone, message me with your requests. Thank you for your interest in my cycad seeds.

SPECIAL ONE TIME DEAL these seeds will sell for $2258.50 If one person with a US address will take all these seeds, I will sell them for $1100 with free priority shipping. I will wait a few days before I reply to smaller requests to give people a chance to take the deal. I will sell them to the first person who says they want them.

I've picked all the Zamia seeds for this season. I have Dioon edule seeds as well still. All types are sold in a minimal group of 20. If you want these seeds, I'm not sure how much pollinating I'll be doing in the future.
My large Dioon edule plants in my front yard are the Palma Sola type. They are known to be a little more tropical and can flush more often than some of the other types. These seeds are $1.25 each.
I've picked the rest of the brown emergent Zamia from Puerto Rico. These are a brown emergent form of what people called Zamia amblyphylidia, and now, erosa. This is a very rare plant unless you have bought these seeds from me before.. these are $3.50 each.

I have 2 different kinds of Zamia integrifolia seeds. Both are from types that grow to be large and have fairly wide leaflets.
I have exactly 26 Palatka Giant seeds. I'm going to call it a lot of 25 seeds that are $1 each. So $25 for these. SOLD

Last year in early September, I showed pollinating this Dioon edule cone. It's now ready to pick. I pollinated 5 cones so it's very likely I'll have at least 500 seeds available soon. It might be more like 750. This is from my sexed pair of Dioon edule from Palma Sola that I show in my Facebook photo. I'll be selling these for $1.25 each and if someone wants all of them, they would be $1 each. The Palma Sola type is a more tropical form that grows a little faster than the types from farther north. I'm not sure about today's demand for Dioon edule seeds, but several years ago, this was one of the more sought after edule types.
Let me know if you will be interested in these. I'll be looking to fill larger orders first just to make it easier for me. Thanks

This is a great time of year for many reasons. One of these reasons is the Dioon edule from Queretaro are flushing right now. I have well over 100 of these in the back yard right now. This is when you find the individual plants that have the bluest color to them as the new leaves start to harden up. I pull a few each year and put them in 15 gallon containers ready for people who search for specimens like this. Even after I sell my giant edule plants up front, I'll probably keep a few of these to plant in the same spot.

I have waited a month on a customer who said he wanted most of the seeds I had left. I'm not waiting any more. I'm selling seeds in groups of at least 20. I still have:
Ceratozamia kuesteriana seeds at $4 each
Dioon edule Rio Verde $1.25 each
Lots of Ceratozamia hildae at $2.25 if you ate interested in several 100 hildae seeds, I can come down on this price. I can't ship Ceratozamia seeds out of the US because they are appendix 1 endangered species. Don't ask me to label them as beads or Zamia seeds like others have suggested this year.
I do have many cones full of cycad seeds that will be ready later this year and next spring but there is a good chance, I won't be selling cycad seeds to the general public any more. So, if you are thinking about waiting until next year, I'd suggest getting what I have now.

The first wave of paid cycad seed orders has been shipped. A few types are sold out. Refer to earlier posts for more details. This is mainly a brief update on what is still available.

I have a sufficient quantity of Ceratozamia hildae seeds available at $2.25 each.

I have about 80 Cycas debaoensis/multifrondis at $4 each

About 90 Dioon edule Rio Verde at $1.25 each

I have about 80 of the Ceratozamia kuesteriana left. I have already had interest in some of these and have told them what it will cost with payment information , but I have not heard anything back.
Message me with your new requests.

Most of this text below is copied from a previous post. I just got in the seeds to broker. I now have the accurate numbers. I am changing the text below to reflect these numbers. On top of these, I just found a cone full of Zamia portoricensis seeds I had missed a month or so ago. So on top of everything below, I have 51 portoricensis seeds at $3.25 each. I have already received many requests for seeds and I'll be writing to those people in the next day, but I'll give some of these people a chance to pick up these portoricensis seeds.

I still have plenty of Ceratozamia hildae seeds available at $2.25 each still available.
The news is, I have a friend who has been growing cycads for decades and has been pollinating his plants. He doesn't want to deal with paypal and other online payments so he's interested in having me broker his seeds. He has some I didn't have this year, so here is a chance to get some other types some people have asked me for. Send me messages on what you would be interested in. I would want to sell minimum amounts of 20 of each type, but I'm going to take larger orders first. I'd rather sell these by the 100 when possible. Here is what I just got in
200 Ceratozamia kuesteriana seeds. $4 each
Dioon "Rio Verde" $1.25 (200)
C. Multifrondis (often sold as debaoensis) $4 (100)
Zamia variegata $2 (cheaper than I sold mine for) 289 seeds
C. rev x debao (or multi) $3 each 155 seeds
Keep in mind almost all the Cycas debaoensis are being called C. multifrondis. I don't go along with this name because I have the real multifrondid directly from Wang and they look nothing like people's debaoensis. One thing that's very interesting are these revoluta hybrids. I made some of these a long time ago and some of the plants turn out pretty cool looking. The optimum people hope for are plants with the revoluta shape, but with some bifurcated leaflets.

I want to thank everyone for your interest in my seeds. All of the Zamias have been sold. One person just backed out on the amount he wanted so I have
15 Ceratozamia kuesteriana seeds still available at $4 each. Selling in one batch
I'm still picking Ceratozamia hildae seeds. I'm guessing I'll have about 500 to 700 still. They are $2.25 each in minimum groups of 20. People have been buying seeds by the 100s, so I may sell out of these soon. Just message me with your requests. Thanks.

I've had lots of requests for Ceratozamia kuesteriana seeds, but I have not replied yet. I wanted to wait until I posted this. I've picked the kuesteriana seeds and also some hikdae seeds from cones that fell apart. I'll have cones falling apart from January on into May sometimes. The seeds picked in January have a different embryo maturation than the ones picked later. With Zamias, it's real easy. If the seed is full size then it's pretty much going to be good. With Ceratozamias like norstogii, you can't day that. In the past, full sized kuesteriana and hildae are usually good. The first picture are tge kuesteriana seeds. The second are some hildae seeds. In both cases there were a few duds in the cones but the ovules were very small. I am assuming these are good seeds, but at this point can't confirm by cutting any more seeds open.
I had some robusta hybrid seeds a couple of years ago that were like these. Ceratozamia seeds have a bit of a learning curve. They need to be kept viable with proper storage, until they are ready to sprout. I've learned just to use the baggie method for germination. You just check them every couple of weeks and all of a sudden, maybe 3 months later, they start sprouting. With my robusta seeds, some people didn't get much and some people got at least 60 to 70%. I had even given up on a pot and saw months later, a bunch had leaves coming out.
Anyway, considering everything I've said, if you still want these seeds, let me know. If you are not able to germinate these seeds, I'm not giving any replacement for seeds or refunding any money. Il start replying to requests tomorrow. If you see this post and want to amend your request, or affirm your request, that will help me a lot. Thanks
