Some days I’m at the shop cutting keys. Some days I’m crawling around a parking lot trying to get somebody back on the road. Some days I’m helping someone I’ll probably run into later at the grocery store.

That’s East County.

Decoding a car door lock with the sun directly in my eyes the whole time. Lying on my back on hot pavement, squinting, getting it done. Nobody said this job was glamorous. I got it done. If your car is missing the emergency key from your fob or it is the wrong one (dealerships love to do this), I will make you the key that opens your door.

Today isn't about barbecues or the long weekend.

It's about the ones who didn't come home.

I spent years in the Marine Corps. I know what service costs. I know what it asks of people and their families.

Today I think about the ones I never got to meet. The ones who died before I ever put on a uniform. The ones whose sacrifice made mine possible.

You don't have to have known someone to feel the weight of this day. Take a moment. Remember them.

That's what today is for. Today, I am spending the day with my family.

I know this sounds like bragging. But I DO have the best customers.

I made a smart key for a couple needing a spare for their Toyota Sienna. While we were talking, the lady noticed the Wiley Wallaby's licorice on my counter, and we ended up having a whole conversation about their flavors. I told her about the green apple, which she said she hadn't tried that flavor yet.

The job went smoothly. Before they left, they asked about getting a spare cut for their grandson's Ford Fusion, too. I ordered the key, called them when it was ready.

When her husband came to pick it up, he walked in with two bags of Green Apple Wiley Wallaby's.

I don't take that stuff for granted. These are real people who trust me with something important, and they treat me like a neighbor. That's not lost on me.
