Are you seeing late summer caterpillars eating the leaves off your oak trees? They could be orangestriped oakworms, which are very common pests on oaks in the late season, often becoming noticeable in August and September. Oakworms are very hungry caterpillars - and they can quickly strip portions of tree branches or completely defoliate small trees. They can also pose a significant threat to tree health if the tree is already stressed, or incidents repeat for more than a couple of years. If you see oakworms on your trees, call your Monster arborist to discuss the best management options for your trees and landscape.

Prior to the early 1900’s, American chestnuts were once the crown jewels of North American hardwood forests extending from New England to the Southeast. Highly valued for their beauty, wildlife value, edible nuts, and their prized wood, these majestic trees once dominated many natural landscapes in Eastern North America - but sadly were all but wiped out in the first half of the 20th Century by chestnut blight. There have been a number of attempts to bring back the American chestnut - which so far have been unsuccessful - but with recent developments in genetic technology, new exciting prospects are now emerging that bring promise to restoring this iconic tree.
