Sod Tax Proposed as Colorado Looks for New Ways to Fund Water

A state task force created by the legislature to explore how Colorado could fund an estimated $20 billion in water needs over the next 30 years recently outlined several potential revenue sources, including a proposed additional tax on sod. The report says the tax could both discourage installation of water intensive turfgrass and generate funding for water projects, while acknowledging that Colorado’s sod industry is relatively small and therefore likely to generate limited revenue.

No new sod tax has been enacted at this time. The proposal is one of several ideas now on the table as Colorado considers how to fund its long term water needs. CNGA will continue to monitor this issue and advocate for the interests of Colorado’s horticulture industry.

CNGA members. Join us for a plant walk in Fruita, CO with horticulturist, author and designer Kenton Seth (pictured, from his blog Paintbrush Gardens).

Date: Wednesday, September 2, 2026
Time: 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. (Social Hour to follow at Fruita Tavern, 153 N Mulberry St.)
Location: 1439 N Oak St., Fruita, CO 81521
Cost: Free for CNGA members (but registration is required, so register today)

Kenton will lead us through an unirrigated xeriscape garden, designed around plants that can thrive without irrigation. Located just two miles from downtown Fruita, the garden offers a chance to see waterwise planting in action and learn more about plant selection, design and creating resilient landscapes.

After the walk, we’ll head into downtown Fruita for a social hour at Fruita Tavern (Formerly Copper Club). It’s a chance to grab a drink, connect with fellow CNGA members and continue the conversation.

We had a great time at the CNGA BBQ at The Windsor Gardener last night!! Thank you to the family and staff!! We were entertained and learned a few things about some of the plants from the CSU trial gardens from Dr Chad Miller! Everyone enjoyed the tour of the High hops brewery and the delicious beverages from it!! The food was excellent, the connections with our peers fantastic and the camaraderie in our industry is special.

2026 CHREF Golf Tournament coming on Sept 11, 2026.
AT: Colorado National Golf Club, 2700 Vista Parkway, Erie, Colorado 80516

Join us for a fun day on the course at Colorado National Golf Club, just north of Denver, while supporting the Colorado Horticulture Research & Education Foundation (CHREF).

Tournament proceeds fund horticulture research at Colorado State University, scholarships for future industry professionals, and programs that support horticulture education.

Registration includes a breakfast burrito, green fees, shared golf cart, range balls, drink ticket, live scoring and a BBQ lunch with awards.

Enjoy contests throughout the day, including Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, a Plant ID challenge, Hole in One, and the always-popular Shovel Tee Off.

CNGA member BBQ and Mini Workshop - Windsor Gardener/High Hops Brewery!
Join us for a summer evening filled with great food, drinks and good company at Windsor Gardener in Windsor, CO.

This member-exclusive BBQ is a chance to connect with peers, explore a vibrant, family-owned garden center and see what’s thriving in northern Colorado.

With four generations in the industry, The Windsor Gardener blends deep growing knowledge with a welcoming, community-centered atmosphere, plus a unique connection to High Hops Brewery, where hops grown right on site make their way into the glass.

We’ll mix a little education with fun, with a mini-workshop beginning at 3:30 p.m., followed by BBQ at 4:30 p.m.. Mini-workshop led by Dr. Chad Miller talking about the top varieties at the CSU Flower trials held Aug 4, with a special emphasis on water-wise varieties.
