Why Professional Equipment Matters for Complex Properties
Professional equipment enables safer, faster work on challenging properties. T & T Tree Service investment in specialized tools means:
• Crane with a certified operator for safe removal – if it’s a rental-get a Certificate of Insurance
• Aerial lifts and bucket trucks for efficient access in tight spaces
• Proper rigging for trees near structures worth tens of thousands

Better equipment means faster completion with less disruption to your carefully designed landscape.
What Are the Hidden Costs of Hiring a Budget Tree Service?
Hidden costs from budget tree service can exceed any upfront savings – sometimes by thousands of dollars. These costs don’t appear on your estimate but show up later as damage, liability, or declining tree health.
Improper Tree Work Leads to Expensive Long-Term Damage
Improper tree work creates problems that compound over time. The most common costly mistakes include:
• Unexpected Emergency Costs: Tree failures caused by poor pruning or structural cuts often require urgent removals, crane work, or hazard mitigation.
• Property & Infrastructure Damage: Root disturbance or improper rigging can crack driveways, damage irrigation systems, and create foundation issues costing thousands to repair.
• Tree Health Decline: Incorrect cuts, topping, and unmanaged wounds open the door to decay, pests, and disease, shortening a tree’s lifespan and reducing property value.
• Future Hazard Creation: Amateur work often sets up the next disaster — weak regrowth, unstable branch unions, and imbalanced canopies that will require costly corrective pruning for years.
In neighborhoods like Princeton and New Hope, where century-old trees define property character, amateur work destroys irreplaceable assets that took generations to develop.
Warning Signs That a Tree Service Estimate Is Too Good to Be True
Warning signs indicate a company may cut corners that cost you later. Before signing any contract, watch for these red flags:
• Company cannot provide a certificate of insurance or refuses to name you as additional insured
• Not registered with NJ Board of Tree Experts, ISA or TCIA?
• No ISA Certified Arborist on staff or available for consultation
• Quote excludes stump grinding, debris removal, or permit fees
• Offers a significant “cash discount” or can’t provide a written contract
• Uses terms like “topping” or “heading cuts” that indicate lack of training

A consultation with a Certified Arborist from T&T Tree Service identifies exactly what your trees need and provides a transparent estimate with no hidden fees. Call 609-397-700 or https://ttservices.com/contact-us/ online and see for yourself why proactive premier care is always superior.

Easter Tent Caterpillar
The Eastern tent caterpillar, Malacosoma americanum, is a pest native to North America. Populations fluctuate from year to year, with outbreaks occurring every several years.
Tent caterpillars prefer wild cherry trees, crabapple and apple and other ornamental fruit trees. Large colonies can significantly defoliate trees, as they feed on the leaves. This usually does not kill trees, which generally develop new leaves, but may make them more susceptible to disease and other problems
These communal caterpillars are noticed by everyone as they cover the trees with a tightly woven silken web.
The caterpillars hatch from egg masses in early May and are most visible later in the season (early June) when their tents have reached a size that can easily be seen while driving 30 mph along most local roadways.
If you can get to the tent, cut the limb from the tree in the late evening when the caterpillars are inside. Destroy the nest by spraying it with a solution of 2 Tablespoons of vinegar in 1 gallon of water or any general pesticide (ant spray).
Or use a long stick to tear open the tents and expose the caterpillars to predators.
If the nests are too high, call T&T and we can schedule a service.

Keep Your Landscape Deer Free

Deer damage to ornamental plants is a recurring problem in many areas. Deer populations in many neighborhoods have grown due to suburban sprawl, with expanses of pavement and expensive, cultivated landscapes. In areas with heavy snowfall in the nearby woods, front and backyard plantings can serve as easy winter forage.
“Deer are selective feeders that eat leaves from flowers, shrubs and ornamental trees,” explains Tchukki Andersen, BCMA, CTSP* and staff arborist with the Tree Care Industry Association. “Damage to larger trees can extend up to 7 feet off the ground.”

In some areas, deer damage peaks in winter when snow cover reduces the food supply. Most areas with overpopulated deer herds experience problems year-round. The availability of natural food sources and the taste preferences of individual deer make deer-proofing a landscape a difficult task in many areas.
“Deer will eat almost any plant rather than starve,” says Andersen, “so damage control measures will be needed in addition to careful plant selection. Use of fencing and repellents also can help control deer damage to landscapes.”

Fences and plant protectors
An 8-foot-tall fence is generally sufficient to deter deer, but a double fence (fence within a fence) is most effective. In the latter case, space the fences about 4-feet apart to prevent deer from jumping both. If the cost and appearance of a double fence seem overwhelming, try tree protectors or wraps to discourage deer from browsing on young trees. Plastic tree wrap, woven-wire mesh cylinders or burlap can be used to protect individual or group plantings. Be sure to unwrap shrubs at the end of the winter to allow for healthy plant growth.

Repellants
Repellents may help deter deer, but they do not eliminate damage completely. Homemade repellents include rotting eggs (mix two eggs with a gallon of water and spray the mixture on ornamentals). The eggs rot on the plants and the smell repels deer. Human hair hung in mesh bags makes a simple repellent. Hang the hair bags on the outer branches of trees about a yard apart and replace them monthly. Bars of strong-smelling soap hung in the same way will also work. This is a good way to make use of all those aromatic Christmas gift soaps you don’t plan to use. Most repellants have limited effectiveness, so switch them up to keep the deer guessing.

Once deer taste your garden, it is difficult to rid them of the habit. Replacing your current mix of trees and shrubs with plants that are less appealing will help move the herd along to other sites. The Tree Care Industry Association recommends planting trees that have a history of surviving areas of heavy deer activity, such as:

Best trees
Downy serviceberry, redbud, hackberry, pinion pine, juniper, paper birch, Japanese false cypress, magnolia, silver maple, peach, plum, willow, Japanese cedar and Colorado blue spruce.

Best shrubs and climbers
Larger, tall shrubs tend to withstand deer browsing better than low-growing ones because they have more leaves, making them able to withstand some defoliation; and taller plants are out of reach. Try these shrubs:
Barberry, pawpaw, boxwood, caryopteria, American bittersweet, red osier dogwood, Japanese plum-yew, creeping wintergreen, hollies, leucothoe, European privet, Japanese andromeda, Virginia creeper, blueberry elder, lavender and rose of Sharon.
Check with your local garden center or tree care company for a list of trees and shrubs in your area that are the least appealing to deer.

Find a professional
A professional arborist can assess your landscape and work with you to determine the best trees and shrubs to plant for your existing landscape.

SCALE insects are Plant Parasites!
Many Scale insects look like a small circular bump that is part of the plant. Cherry Laurels, Laurels, Lilacs, Hollies and Dogwood are some of the favored plants.
Scale insects feed by sucking sap. They feed on (suck the life out of) soft tissue new growth on leaf shoots, the underside of leaves and small stems. They are a tiny insect, ranging in size from 1/16 to 1/8 inch. They can be round, elongated, bumpy or crab-like in shape. Colors vary from white, black, tan, amber or yellow. Up close and personal, they line up in rows to such on the sap

The sucking causes discoloration, yellowing or wilting of the leaves, stunting or unattractive appearance of the plants and eventually death of all or part of the plant when the infestation is heavy. Sooty mold, a black fungus, can also develop on plants infested with soft scale insects due to the honeydew (p**p) they secrete.
Scale are generally not one of those insect pests that go away on their own. Scale spreads quickly and easily, by the wind or through cross-contamination. Scale can even infect house plants by attaching to your clothing. Control is almost always necessary.
There are several methods to control scale: Pruning, Insecticidal soap, Neem oil, Rubbing alcohol, Horticultural oils and Systemic insecticides.
Based on the infestation, T&T can recommend several options. For heavy infestation, a topical insecticide is the number one choice to “kill” as many as possible, followed by two treatments – approximately 30 days apart - using Horticultural oil to smother remaining insects and any larva.
In the fall, organic fertilization is recommended to assist the plants during recovery. Otherwise, for normal control, Horticultural oil is recommended.
T&T recommends that customers continue with the horticultural oil treatments for at least the following growing season, and inspections to monitor the control.

Larvae and pupae live in any stagnant water, including bird baths, clogged gutters, used tires, and pool covers!
Over the next several weeks, we’ll post NINE common herbs and plants that have multiple benefits. All plants listed can be found at any local garden center.

Marigolds
Who knew that Marigolds were good for something other than summer long color? They’re easy to grow and they have a chemical called pyrethrum in them.
Pyrethrum is an ingredient used in many insecticides and repellants. The smell is off-putting to most critters. Another benefit – Deer won’t eat them. Use them as natural deer fencing around other flowers!
