Your floor is part of the navigation system now.
As service robots, AI monitors, and autonomous mobility move into senior living and healthcare, finishes designers used to choose purely for residents now also have to read well to a LiDAR sensor and roll smoothly under a caster wheel.
A few things worth specifying:
→ Gloss in the 25–60 GU range (too shiny "blooms" sensors)
→ Mid-tones over deep blacks (dark fields create LiDAR blind zones)
→ Calm patterns over high-contrast geometry (kinder to visual SLAM)
→ Level changes held to ¼" or less between rooms
→ Slip resistance protected — robot-friendly should never trade away fall safety
The good news: almost everything on a robot-ready spec sheet is already what makes a floor great for the residents living on it.
