I got a yucky headboard at Goodwill for eight dollars and reupholstered it in a cream chenille. I wanted the option of changing it out sometimes, so I made a slipcover for it with a lovely plaid taffeta I had been given several years ago. It had originally been balloon shades, and several years ago I had reupholstered a chair in it. I used the rest to make the slipcover for the headboard, and I cut down the dust ruffle to fit the twin bed. I am really happy with the results!

I bartered some consultation time for this sweet kitchen hutch. It had a maple varnish finish, but was a little beat up. I primed it and then painted it this cheerful yellow. It adds a nice splash of color to my kitchen and gives me a little more storage space, as well as allows me to showcase some minor treasures. Though the rest of the house is a little more formal, I have always seen the kitchen as a work room, so it's a little more functional than beautiful. That said, though, I still like having some pretty things to perk up the space!

This has been my most ambitious project, I believe. I found two chairs at Goodwill that had good "bones", but were really grungy. I mean, you could see the outline of a body in the fabric on each of them! However, I knew I would be replacing the fabric and foam, so that didn't really matter. I like getting furniture at Goodwill and Salvation Army (and other such places) because I know they have been treated to annihilate any unwelcome guests of the insect variety.
So, having found these really nice chairs, I began the process of finding the right fabric. This is the most fun part of the process for me. I am not a professional upholsterer, so the work is kind of hard for me. But I LOVE the creative process of finding the fabric that showcases a piece. I finally found just what I wanted at Hobby Lobby in the marked down section. However, it wasn't marked down near enough, so I took the risk of waiting. And I waited. And waited. It took six months, but it finally went on sale enough that I could justify getting it.
It has taken a long time to get them done. Of course, there were some big family things going on, so they only got worked on in intervals, but eventually I reached the finish line! I'm pleased with them.
My next projects will be an early 70's era love seat and an antique settee. I can't wait to show you what I've chosen for them!
Happy spring, my friends. As I take yucky furniture and restore it to beauty, I always think how God takes my yucky and makes it beautiful again. (Sometimes that, too, takes a long time!!) As the earth renews itself and ugly turns beautiful again, let's let Him work on our hearts!

Like everyone else at this time of year, I'm busy making, buying and wrapping gifts. Though I am intentional about this being a holy season and making sure I savor the Reason, I still get caught up in the busyness at times.

This afternoon I got to take care of my three year old granddaughter for a while. Sometimes when I watch her, I continue with my tasks, knowing she doesn't need constant entertainment and interaction, but today I chose to lay everything else aside and play with her.

I learned that a Tyrannosaurus Rex was a carnivore, and a Brachiosaurus was a plant eater; that cowapiwars (caterpillars) become butterflies; that there were nine birds in the neighbor's tree; that birds build nests and lay eggs that hatch into baby birds; and that the box in her room at Grandma's house is a treasure chest.

In this season of joy may you be gifted with such a fun afternoon as I just had. I watched as she watched me, then tried to cross her legs while she sat in her rocker and make circles with her ankle like I was doing. I hope you will experience something equally comforting and joyful. Have a blessed Christmas and New Year!!

I seem to be working on a number of chairs recently, but I got to thinking that it's a great time of year to do so because the holidays are coming, and we all need chairs to offer our guests when they come to visit! Every season offers something wonderful. This is the time we visit and share special days together.. I hope we all make great memories with family and friends, whatever holiday or gathering we are celebrating!

Here's my latest endeavor.. This chair was purchased in the 1920's by a client's grandparents. It had been reupholstered once, probably in the 60's or 70's, but the fabric had worn out again. The client asked me to refinish the wood and reupholster the chair. The fabric she chose surprised me, but when I was done, I had to admit she chose wisely! I hope she and her family think of her grandparents and parents visiting in that chair in years past as they now visit current family and friends!

Here's a chair I recently finished for a client. Well, actually I finished six of them! The chairs were covered in a dated fabric, and the client's family suggested she replace them, but she really loved the chairs, so she purchased fabric and foam and batting and decided to recover them herself. However, without the tools she needed, the task became overwhelming, so she brought them to me. I am delighted they turned out so well. She chose a handsome fabric, and just in time for the holidays has chairs for family meals. Yay! (And I met a delightful woman!!)

This is the book (Rhythms of Rest) I am currently reading. It was given to me, and I knew immediately that it was given at just the right time. It's been a really busy summer, trying to meet deadlines, keep two businesses running and help some special people with important projects. I have to admit I've been "running from pillar to post", as the saying goes.

As you may remember, I had a health scare this spring and have been on a quest to eat right and exercise. I also changed my work hours to allow for more recuperation after full, intense days. Somehow, though, things crept in, and I have allowed time to get filled in with projects, none of them bad, instead of keeping some time set aside to rest and recharge.

I remember Jesus' words that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. It isn't that I am being bad by not resting, it's that not resting is bad for me. I know God doesn't make rules because He's the Policeman in the Sky and wants to have power over us; rather it's that His love for us is so great that He wants what is best for us. Rest is essential. I know this book is going to help me get back to a healthier lifestyle, and I suspect I will begin to take note of the many blessings such a lifestyle will bring.

Bless you all my friends! May we find that balance of work, play and rest that we all need!

This way a "throw away" chair because the upholstery had been damaged by a cat. I loved the shape of it and found what I think is the perfect fabric to re-do it. I also painted the nondescript wood and then applied an antiquing wax.

As I worked on it, I thought of the dents and scrapes I've incurred over my life and of the many times God and family and friends have done repairs on me!

I really love taking something banged up and making it pretty. You can see this and other redone items at Hubbard's Cupboard, 620 N. Main Street, Baltimore, Ohio,

Here's a little Christmas in July! I made this tree skirt and these stockings as examples of the possibilities to updating Christmas decor. The tree skirt is lined, as are the stockings so they hang nicely, don't look flimsy and support all those gifts! As Christmas approaches later this year, it might be a good time to review your decorations and perhaps replace some old ones, or add to what you typically use.
I'm especially fond of the Cowboy Christmas stocking! So, if you have a cowboy/cowgirl you'd like to bless or a Disney princess fan, it's a good time to order before the holiday rush is upon us! The tree skirt is $25.00 and the stockings are $15.00 a piece.

What DO you do with the top of a china cupboard when you no longer have the bottom half? Why, you turn it into a coffee bar /liquor cabinet /curio cabinet! The back was missing, so I put beadboard on it to stabilize it and give a backdrop for the contents, then I painted the top and installed casters. It's the perfect height to stand around and talk at your next party!

Recycling at its best!

Ahh, Spring! Usually at this time of the year I am encouraging myself and others to get organized, to clear out the winter grunge, and create a warm, happy space.
Somehow, my little line "Creating beauty in your inner and outer world" took on a whole new depth of meaning about five weeks ago when I ended up in the emergency room with chest pain.
Initial discoveries of high blood pressure and indigestion became less scary when a subsequent revelation of heart blockage was made. I just kept thinking, "This can't be right; I'm a very healthy person!"
Well, the cardiac catheterization showed the blockage can be managed with medication, which is a relief. I have had a little difficulty adhering to the post-op instructions of lifting no more than five pounds for a week, but I've managed.
So, here's to creating beautiful, cleaned out arteries! Diet and exercise changes have begun, and I look forward to more years of creating beauty and order through education and the renovation of used items. Let's all have a wonderful Spring!
