Nature Coast Chapter May events: Open to everyone.
Tuesday, May 14th chapter meeting:

Time: 7:00 pm

Presentation by Tom Ries, is a nationally known ecologist with more than 40 years of experience restoring natural systems in the SE.
Presentation topic: Ecosphere Restoration Institute - Our Mission, Accomplishments, and Future Initiatives
This non-profit was founded in 2003, primarily to formulate public/private/partnerships to implement meaningful habitat restoration/preservation efforts in valuable locations. We will highlight several representative projects and discuss lessons learned and future initiatives, including our latest collaboration portal: Eco Alliance.

Thursday, May 16th Field Trip:
What: EcoTour Boat Trip on Tampa Bay with Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center.
Where: 700 2nd Ave. NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701
Date and Time: Thursday, May 16, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm (boat leaves at 11:30 am)
Arrive at: 11:00 for time to park and walk to the launch.
Meet: at Gate 23 on the St. Pete Pier at 11:15 so we can leave by 11:30.
Park: In either the Dolphin Lot or the Pelican Lot, proceed to Eco-Vessel Launch
Bring a bag lunch to eat on the boat.
Cost: $17 per person.
The trip is limited to 45 people. There will be sign up sheet and you can pay at the April or May meeting or contact Jonnie Spitler [email protected] Please limit guests to 2 people.

Explore the Tampa Bay ecosystem with marine science educators from Tampa Bay Watch’s Discovery Center. We will do some wildlife watching, learn about the area’s history and a fisheries trawl will enable us to take a closer look at common local species. Frequent sightings from the boat include dolphins, manatees, birds, stingrays, and more.
If you would like to visit the Discovery Center after the tour, the exhibit gallery features interactive displays, live animals, and a touch tank. Admission is $8 for adults, $3 for children and $6 for seniors.

Nature Coast Chapter June events: Open to everyone.
Saturday, June 22nd chapter meeting and field trip combined.
Where: Heartwood Preserve, 4100 Starkey Blvd, Trinity, FL 34655.
When: June 22nd at 9:30 am.
We will have our meeting in the preserve’s Welcome Center with breakfast refreshments available.
After the meeting we will enjoy a field trip through the conservation lands.
Pine Flatwoods, longleaf pine, wiregrass, saw palmetto, wildflowers, gopher tortoises, bobwhite quail, Sherman’s fox squirrel, Florida wild turkey and white-tailed deer.
Cypress Dome Wetlands replenishes the Floridan aquifer. See both bald and pond cypress.

No meeting or field trip in July.

Craig Huegel will talk about the USF Botanical Garden with a focus on the Native Plant Collection.

February Field Trip: USF Botanical Gardens
Date and Time: Saturday, February 24, 2024, 9:30 am
Meeting Location: 12210 USF Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612
(Intersection of USF Pine and Alumni Drives.)
Meet in the parking lot of the Gardens.
Craig Huegel will do a follow up on his presentation at our February meeting and lead us on a tour of the USF Botanical Gardens with a focus on their Native Plant collection. Tour cost is $6 per person. Pay as you enter the garden. Wear good walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bring your own water.

Topic: Chronicling the Development of a Native Wildflower Garden

Presenter Roberta Owens will talk about the development of the wildflower garden and several native plant and pollinator gardens that surround VISTA Gardens, a community garden in the Carrolwood area where members grow vegetables and flowers for their families and neighbors. Ms. Owens will cover the importance of companion planting in vegetable gardening to attract pollinators, beneficial insects and wildlife.

October 10th, Chapter Meeting
Topic: Florida’s Carnivorous Plants
Time: 7:00 pm
Where: Heritage Park Community Center, 5401 Land O’ Lakes, Blvd, LOL FL.
Our speaker is Kenny Coogan, who is an active member with the International Carnivorous Plant Society. Learn about the evolution, people, and natural history of this area to discover why Florida is a hotspot of carnivorous plants.

October 14th, Field Trip to Janet Butterfield Environmental Area
Topic: The mosaic of upland species that call the preserve home, and the fall blooms.
Where: 15478 Bailey Hill Rd. Brooksville, FL 34614
Time: 9:00 am Meet at the south entrance of the WEA along Bailey Hill Road. For navigation purposes use the address directly across from the entrance, 15478 Bailey Hill Rd. Park along the North side of Bailey Hill Road as far off the road as possible. No restrooms at the location. The hike is just under 2 miles along sandy and uneven terrain.

Nature Coast Chapter August events:

August 8th – Chapter meeting and Movie night. Join us for a viewing of the award-winning documentary Serengeti Rules. A group of scientists travel back in time to make surprising discoveries that transform human understanding of nature and ecology.

August 28th - Demo Garden Maintenance at Heritage Park Community center. 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Bring some tools and help keep our demo garden beautiful.

Our garden is looking beautiful thanks to some wonderful members who spend a couple of hours each month in community to spruce up our demonstration garden. Please bring some tools, and join us for demo garden maintenance Monday, May 22nd, at Heritage Park Community center at 5401 Land O' Lakes Blvd, Land O' Lakes, FL from 9:00 AM until about 10:30 AM.

Topic: Defend Yourself - How bugs and bloomers survive. Insects and plants have evolved ways that are often astonishing and sometimes bizarre, to survive when everything is out to eat them.
Presenter: John Lampkin is an avid naturalist and Nature photographer. John’s presentation is a visually delightful, fun, and educational exploration of a 450-million-year-old “arms race.”

Saturday, May 13th at 9:00 AM. Field Trip. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Hike Janet Butterfield Brooks Wildlife and Environmental Area (WEA)
Hosted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)
The Hernando Chapter FNPS has invited us to join them in a rare opportunity to explore the the Janet Butterfield Brooks WEA.

Meet at the south entrance of the WEA (comprised of a vehicle sized gate) along Bailey Hill Road. There is no address for this entrance, use the address for the residence directly across from the entrance for navigation purposes. 15478 Bailey Hill Rd, Brooksville, FL 34614 which is 0.3 miles west of Citrus Way. Park along the North side of Bailey Hill Road as far off the road as you can manage.
Wear good walking, closed toed shoes, and sunscreen. Bring a hat, water, bug repellant and a snack. There are no restrooms at Janet Butterfield, so please plan accordingly.
Note: For those that are interested we can have lunch at a spot in Brooksville on our way home.
