This deck was last stained in September 2022, so it went a little past the normal maintenance window.

We came in with a full wash and brightening treatment to bring the wood back to life. Once dry we’ll follow it up with another coat of Honey to protect it for the next few years.

Regular maintenance coats keep decks looking great and prevent expensive sanding or restoration later on.

If your deck has been 2–3+ years since the last coat, it’s probably time to freshen it up.

🪵 Ipe Deck Maintenance — Why Annual Care Matters

Ipe is one of the most dense and durable hardwoods you can put on a deck — but even ipe isn’t maintenance-free.

Because of its density and natural oils, ipe typically needs professional maintenance every 9–12 months to stay protected and keep its rich color. That just the nature of this wood.

This project was the second maintenance coat on this deck. Before we took over, the deck had a film-forming stain, which does not perform well on dense hardwoods like ipe and made stripping much more difficult.

Our annual ipe maintenance process includes:
✔️ Chemical stripping to remove old oils, oxidation, and failed coatings
✔️ Sanding to fully open the grain and smooth the surface
✔️ Wash & brighten to neutralize and restore natural tone
✔️ Professional oil-based staining to pe*****te and protect (not sit on top)

Skipping maintenance — or using the wrong type of product — can lead to fading, uneven color, surface checking, and shortened deck life. Staying on schedule with the right process keeps ipe looking right and aging the way it should.
