Sharing some of my private reserve Chocolate Cosmos…

As I continue to have fun creating new flower forms of this fertile variety of Chocolate Cosmos, each season I segregate flower forms that make me go 'WOW!". I have been working with a flower form that has thicker petals than Pirouette but is not as huge of a bloom as Bodacious Swirl, yet it has the fun twist of the petals like the other two varieties. For now I call this work in progress "Cosmos Twister", but I'll come up with something more refined once I stabilize the variety. I grew a nice crop from seed last year for my trial garden but I don't need all 65 plants so I decided to add them to my webstore chocolateflowerfarm.com. They are one year old dormant tubers in 4” pots. Chocolate Cosmos are perennials. Enjoy!

Let the season’s chick hatching begin! We have our first incubator full with Marans chicks hatching in 13 days. Enough of our darkest eggs are collected to start the second batch of chicks so I’ll fire up that incubator and get these chicks ahatchin. Folks ask to be on a list for chicks when they hatch but I’ve discovered that I’m too discombobulated to manage a wait list so I have simply listed our first three scheduled hatches on my website chocolateflowerfarm.com. happy spring! 🐣🐣🐣.

Sweet peas that are kissed by chocolate. After searching the world for many years to find and grow the most chocolate-colored sweet peas we are pleased to offer an exclusive chocolate blend of the best of the best varieties. Chocolate "flaked" varieties that we have grown have shown to have a fairly wide range of color variations with many leaning more toward reds and pinks in the brushed color rather than maroon and browns so we have hand selected all that were the darker tones we were seeking and created this exclusive seed blend. The chocolate flake varieties that this blend is created from are: Chocolate Flake (tends to have predominantly reddish streaks rather than chocolate so lots of culls but an occasional one worth saving), Wiltshire Ripple, Raspberry Ripple, Blackberry and Borderline. Varieties such as Chocolate Streamer were not even worth growing since the color is just red streaks which we found to be common in most varieties promoted as having chocolate coloring. After over 15 years of culling, hand selecting and careful breeding we have created the perfect blend of Kissed by Chocolate Sweet Peas. We have seed available at our Farmstore as well as on our chocolateflowerfarm.com website store. Now is the time to plant sweet pea seeds and our greenhouses are stuffed with potted up seeds. We will have starts available at the farm and through the Whidbey Island Food Hub in about a month.

Gardeners, start your engines! Its sweet pea seed starting time and I can’t wait to get started! I’m planting over 30 varieties in my sweet pea garden this season for next fall’s seed sales. I’ve been growing sweet peas since starting Chocolate Flower Farm 21 yrs ago and it will always be one of my favorite flowers. There is still availability on our website www.chocolateflowerfarm.com of our chocolate sweet pea ‘Kissed by Chocolate’ and for zinnia lovers I have added a limited number of seed packets of zinnia ‘Caramel’ the chocolate colored zinnia I’m working on making more chocolatey each year. Zowie! Our first egg from one of our five mo old F2 (second back crossed) Chocolate Egger and it’s a beaut!🤎. It’s the small egg on the right and the egg on the left is our F1 Chocolate Egger egg that these pullets hatched out from. Each generation of backcrossing to our dark egg genetic Blue Copper Marans roo should get darker but this one is hard to beat. Yay!

Working at my kitchen island tonight packaging Chocolate Cosmos seeds and holiday orders and realize I have an impromptu still life pic in front of me …. so I took it and am sharing.
