June isn't the end of planting. It's the start of the second season.

The spring window closed, but warm soil above 70°F is exactly what beans, squash, cucumbers, and sunflowers need to germinate fast.

- Bush beans — 60 days. Sow every two weeks through July for continuous harvest into October.

- Zucchini — 50 days. June sowings often dodge the early vine borer wave that hits May transplants.

- Cucumbers — 60 days. Direct sow into warm ground. June plantings avoid the cucumber beetle peak.

- Sunflowers — 70 days. One seed, one stalk. Late August bloom extends garden color into fall.

- Fall brassicas — start indoors now. Broccoli and cabbage need the head start to mature before frost.

- Lettuce — 30 days under shade cloth. Sow every two weeks between taller crops and she won't bolt.

The chart shows the window. It's the one that closes while you think planting season is over.

Stages of Growing Potato Plants

Selecting Seed Potatoes – Grow potatoes from potatoes or from seed
– Select certified disease-free seed potatoes
– Buy quality seed potatoes, not grocery store potatoes
– Many varieties to choose from

Planting Potatoes – Cool season crop
– Protect from hard frosts
– Start in spring for summer harvest
– Prep planting site

Sprouts – 2-4 weeks from planting to sprout
– Sprouts develop from potato eyes
– First leafy green growth

Vegetative Growth – Plants grow larger, fuller
– 60-100 days of rapid growth
– Green leaves convert sunlight into energy
– Tubers start to form below ground
– Watch for pests on leaves
– Keep plot weeded
– Remove leafy debris

Tuber Formation – After sprouting, 15-30 days of tuber formation
– Plant creates all tubers for the season
– Very small, beanlike growths on roots

Tuber Growth – Flowers bloom 60-70 days after planting
– Blossoms are white or pale purple
– Plant nearing the end of life cycle

Harvest – Up to 120 days after planting
– Harvest when vegetation dies back
– Loosen the soil around the plant with a garden fork
– Harvest potatoes
– Store in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place
– Store for up to 8 months

I time planting tomatoes to try to space out harvesting to last from July 4th through September. These Big Boys were planted at the end of March and looking like these should be ripe by July 4th. ❤️
