Kapala Heating & Air Conditioning – Keeping the Community Comfortable
For nearly five decades, Kapala Heating & Air Conditioning has helped local families and businesses stay comfortable through Michigan’s ever-changing seasons. Behind the company is a story of family dedication, resilience and deep community roots.
Janet Engelman, president of Kapala Heating & Air Conditioning, grew up around the business her father founded in 1978. But she stepped into leadership far earlier than expected. When her father passed away, Engelman was just 21 years old. “I took over the business in 1982,” Engelman said. “It wasn’t something I planned at that age, but the community supported us and we kept moving forward.”
The following year, Engelman married her husband, who soon became a vital part of the company. Together they have led Kapala for more than four decades, building it into a thriving family-run operation. Their three children grew up around the business, helping create the same family atmosphere that still defines the workplace today. “It’s truly a family environment here,” Engelman said.
Today the company employs 33 people and continues to grow. After moving into its current facility in 2021, Kapala doubled both its physical footprint and the size of the business.
Kapala serves both residential and commercial customers, installing and servicing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Whether homeowners need a new furnace, air conditioner, humidifier or repairs to existing equipment, the company offers a full range of services.
Beyond traditional heating and cooling, Kapala also offers several products many homeowners may not realize are available. The company installs humidification systems, smart thermostats, air purification systems designed to reduce viruses and bacteria, flood detectors for basements, water heaters and backup generators. “I don’t think people realize all the products we carry,” Engelman said. “Our goal is to make your home comfortable and safe.”
Community involvement is also a core part of Kapala’s mission. Engelman currently serves as vice president of the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce board, and the company supports many local nonprofits, youth programs and veterans organizations throughout the area. “We support the communities that support us,” Engelman said. “These are the people we serve every day.”
Kapala also maintains strong ties with nearby Oxford, where many customers live and work. “We love the Oxford community,” Engelman said. “It really feels like a sister community to us.”
