🌿 This Week's Best is absolutely outstanding! These natives really know how to put on a show.

πŸ”₯ Firebush
Hands down, one of the most popular native shrubs we sell at the nursery. This extravagant and bold native is perfect for gardeners of all levels. Its vibrant yellow and red blooms appear year-round, but are most prominent in the warmer months. They attract a myriad of pollinators and even migrating hummingbirds that feed on their nectar. It's best planted in full sun and can do well in poor, well-drained soils. Once established, it can be drought-tolerant.

🌱 White Oldfield Aster
This is a deciduous perennial wildflower that comes from the Panhandle and Marion County. It can grow to about 2-3ft tall and prefers moist/dry well-drained soils and shade, as it naturally occurs in hammock environments. It blooms in the fall and produces small, white aster flowers all over the plant.

🌿 Lemon Bacopa
This low-growing perennial wildflower/groundcover is perfect for rain gardens and bioswales. It loves moist to wet soils with full sun and can even do well in containers. Tiny purple flowers bloom from late spring to fall and attract butterflies such as the Pearl Crescent, which uses them as a host plant.

🌾 Mangrove Spiderlily
A perennial lily grown from a bulb that produces fragrant and spidery white flowers. It's adapted to inundation in salt water, full to part sun, and can be drought-tolerant once established. Over time, these plants can multiply and form clumps that put on quite a showy display.

πŸ‡ Sea Grape
An incredibly recognizable coastal evergreen shrub/tree. They produce spikes of white flowers that precede reddish fruits that hang in grape-like clusters on female plants. A great choice for high wind and salt exposure on beachfront locations. It should be planted in well-drained soil in full to part sun. They can get quite large, up to 30-40ft in height, so be sure to plan for their mature size. The one pictured is a 15-gallon size.

These natives are gorgeous! Which one would you take home?

🌿 Natural. Low Maintenance. Inviting Year-Round.

We recently finished the installation of this private retreat in beautiful Dunedin, FL, designed by our senior landscape designer, Paul. These clients wanted to ditch their traditional lawn and replace it with something that would reduce watering demands and upkeep. So we installed Matchweed (aka Frogfruit), an elegant, soft, Florida groundcover that blends perfectly with the rest of their landscape.

Amongst their priorities were privacy and shade, so Paul worked with the clients to select some natives and Florida-Friendly plants that would satisfy these needs. These selections were layered around an existing Cedar and not only look sophisticated, but act as functional elements in this relaxing space.

Anchoring everything together is a gorgeous custom pergola. Here, the clients can have relaxing evenings, family gatherings, and weekend get-togethers they'll remember for years to come.

🌿 It's June...which generally kicks off Florida's rainy season and so marks the beginning of local fertilizer ordinances.

πŸ—“οΈ From June 1st until September 30th, almost all Florida counties ban the sale and use of fertilizers containing Nitrogen and Phosphorus.

This does not, however, mean you can't give your plants energy during this time. Addressing nutrient deficiencies and plant health issues is still possible. Compost products are a great way to feed your soil without the risk of harmful nutrient runoff like traditional fertilizers. Yellow, brown, or curling leaves/fronds? Try treating them with nutritional sprays or micronutrient mixes. This can often be the cause of these issues and not a nitrogen deficiency, as most would think. Check your soil's pH as well. Many don't realize that if you soils pH isn't correct, the nutrients available in your soil can't be absorbed by the plants' roots.

These restrictions are set in place to protect our waterways and fragile aquatic ecosystems. Following them is extremely important, and it's our duty as inhabitants of this beautiful state to do so. It must also be known that most counties prohibit the application of fertilizers during a period for which the National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm, flood, tropical storm, and hurricane watch/warning, or if rain greater than or equal to two inches in 24 hours is forecasted.

Also note that the application of fertilizers containing phosphorus cannot ever be applied unless a phosphorus deficiency has been demonstrated in your landscape.

🌿 Summer is officially here, and so is Florida's rainy season! With our rainy season approaching, now is a great time to plant and establish new natives.

πŸ’§ Proper watering is key to establishing newly planted natives. Regular summer storms can often be a blessing in disguise, saving you money and helping your plants. These storms help deliver water deep into the soil without even touching your hose! Constantly checking local weather forecasts and soil moisture can help prevent overwatering. When you see rain in the forecast, be sure to adjust your irrigation system or refrain from hand watering.

The best time to plant is late afternoon. This helps you avoid most of the midday sun and gives your new plants the evening and night to settle in. When gardening in the summer, remember to always stay hydrated and utilize shade when available.

Here are some of our favorite natives to plant in June:

🌻 Black-eyed Susan:
- Short-lived perennial or annual
- Works well in mixed wildflower beds or containers
- Hardier than most hybrid species

🌿 Partridge Pea:
- Inconspicuous, slender wildflower with showy yellow blooms
- Adapted to harsh, dry soils and lots of sun
- Has an extensive list of butterflies that use it as a larval plant

🌳 Winged Elm:
- Extremely popular shade tree
- Fast growing, but strong
- Broad canopy harbors songbird nests

🏝️ Sea Purslane:
- Important erosion control native groundcover
- Very adaptable succulent
- Great turf replacement for coastal landscapes

🌿 Although temps have been rising, these natives are still showing up looking their absolute best! Check out This Week's Best:

🫧 American Elderberry

A graceful deciduous or semi-evergreen large bush to small tree that produces adorable, fragrant white flowers from spring to fall. Although poisonous when raw, its fruit can be cooked and is often used in jams, syrups, and wine. It also has many health benefits. It's quite adaptable, tolerating flooding and moist to average soils. If you want the most flowers, plant in full sun and moist soil.

🌿 Corkystem Passionvine

This is the most common Passionvine growing in Florida and is a favorite amongst Zebra Longwing, Gulf Fritillary, and Julia butterflies. This is a versatile plant that can be trellised or allowed to grow naturally on shrubs and trees; care must be taken to ensure it doesn't smother them. Once it flowers, its fruit provides a great food source to birds.

🌊 Beach Mistflower

Looking for inconspicuous pops of delicate color? Beach Mistflower is perfect! This plant makes a great bedding plant in well-drained landscapes or as a container plant, cascading down the sides of a planter. In the warmer months, its fuzzy clusters of lavender flowers attract Skipper butterflies.

🌼 Starry Rosinflower

This plant absolutely reaches for the stars and has been seen growing to heights exceeding 4 feet. It blooms year-round in central Florida, with its heaviest blooms taking place from spring to fall. It looks best when planted in groups and allowed to grow tall above other accent plants. When the stems get thick and unattractive, cut them back, and you'll be rewarded with heavier blooms.

🌳 Sweetgum

A large, fast-growing deciduous shade tree with distinct star-shaped leaves that turn a beautiful array of colors in the fall before they drop. It produces recognizable, spiny, ball-shaped fruits with seeds inside that birds and squirrels love. Pioneers once peeled back its bark and used its resin to produce chewing gum. The one pictured is a 30 -gal size, its full size is shown in the last photo.
