JUNE GARDENING TIPS:

WATER-
Pay attention to hanging baskets and containers because they dry out more quickly with the warmer temperatures. Irrigate plants at dawn and dusk to reduce water loss from evaporation. For lawns or irrigating directly on plants leaves be sure water has evaporated from the leaves within an hour and a half from the time irrigation has finished. This will help prevent fungus issues. As you make additions to your garden you will want to monitor the new areas since they need more water than established plantings.

MULCH-
Apply extra shredded bark mulch around newly planted trees and shrubs to better transition these plants into your garden. The extra mulch will reduce water loss and heat stress to the new roots.

MOISTURE METER-
Invest in a moisture meter and use before watering. This will help you keep track of levels. Most plant irrigation problems are caused by overwatering rather than underwatering. Remember not to leave your moisture meter in soil such as a pot when not in use. Wipe off the tip with your fingers and store out of direct sunlight or indoors.

05/01/2026

APRIL GARDENING TIPS:

MULCH-
Now that winter is gone remove and replace mulch around such plants as roses because disease spores and insects may have overwintered in this material. If you think disease or insects are not a problem you can save some money and just freshen your mulch.

LAWNS-
It's time to start cutting warm-season turf such as bermuda. Be careful not to scalp your lawn. Adjust the blade height so that the turf looks cut when finished but you can't see spots of soil. A good rule of thumb for spring cutting is to remove only about the top third to half of the grass blades each cutting. Then move forward mowing to remove about a third of the blades. During periods of fast growth try to cut your lawn at least once a week.

HERBS-
With the frost period passed it's time to plant herbs. Culinary herbs are easy to grow but be sure that you've planted enough of the ones you frequently use. As a general rule it takes twice as many fresh herbs as it does dried ones to equal the same amount of flavor in cooking. Pots work well and keep them outside closest to the kitchen for convenience.

MARCH GARDENING TIPS:

LAWNS-
As warm-season turf like bermuda grass begins to green up in your area its time to think about fertilizing your grass. You may certainly apply a granular only fertlizer at this point since liquid ones are not effective this time of year.. Follow the labels instructions and early summer watch your neighbors be green with envy!

W**D CONTROL-
In our area with so many landscapes comprising of mostly decorative rock w**ds can become a huge problem. Now is the time to apply a pre-emergent herbicide. There are granular and liquid forms available. Follow the manufactures instructions and have a w**d free landscape without all the work. Keep in mind these applications will only sterilize seeds and won't control w**ds once sprouted.

02/01/2026

FEBRUARY GARDENING TIPS:

PRUNING-
For the majority of trees now is a good time to prune them. If limbs are more than an inch in diameter use the three-step method for removing branches. Make the first cut on the underside of the limb around six to eight inches away from the trunk. Cut about half the thickness of the branch. Go to the top of the limb and cut off the limb halfway between the underside cut and the trunk. The resulting stub should then be cut within a half inch of the trunk. Cut branches, taking care not to destroy the natural shape of the plant.

LAWN CARE-
Winter w**ds are evident in dormant warm-season turf now. Apply spot applications of post-emergence herbicides or hand pull to control. When selecting a post-emergence herbicide such as Weed-Stop, or Weed-B-Gon make sure you follow label directions and that the product is approved for your particular grass type. Otherwise you may injure or kill it.

01/01/2026

JANUARY GARDENING TIPS:

TURF-
Now is the time to pick up any loose leaves and twigs which may have gotten blown into your yard. And a dry winter day is a great time to mow a dormant warm season lawn such as Bermuda! Lower your mower wheels and mow in a cris cross pattern. This grooms the lawn and removes excess debris which is more difficult to capture with a rake. It also allows you to inspect your yard for winter w**ds for removal. Water thoroughly once mowed.

PLANTING-
While fall is ideal for planting shrubs and trees this month in New Mexico is still a good time to plant new shrubs and trees. Walk your landscape and do an inventory. You can remove unattractive plants and replace them with others that are more in tune with your landscape and that which expresses your personality!

12/02/2025

DECEMBER GARDENING TIPS:

IRRIGATION-
If your automatic watering system stays on all year (as it likely should in the southwest) it's time to adjust the amount of watering during each cycle. Many dormant plants require lower amounts of water in colder months. This also includes warm season bermuda grass. It may look "dead" but there are active root systems.
If you lowered your irrigation in the fall and plants have done well since then a good rule of thumb is to reduce irrigation time by half when night temperatures remain in the 40s or below. And of course turn the system off in rainy periods to reduce costs and prevent overwatering.

Backflow prevention devices such as PVB's and AVB's should have a protective covering over them. Pipes should be sch 80 coming out of the ground and they do not need to be wrapped. You may want to consider hiring a professional to winterize your irrigation manifold. At the very least consult with one. He or she should be able to give direct tips for your particular situation.

11/02/2025

NOVEMBER GARDENING TIPS:

CLEAN UP AND COMPOST-
Cleaning up the garden will yield plenty of fallen leaves and plant debris for compost. In an out-of-the-way corner of the garden mix green and dry materials with a shovelful of soil and an optional handful of fertilizer (any kind except a w**d-and-feed product). Sprinkle with water weekly if there is no rain. You'll have compost by spring. You'll have compost sooner if you turn the pile.

COOL SEASON LAWNS-
Fertilize tall fescue and other cool-season lawns with a quality lawn fertilizer or plant food with the following ratio of N P K such as 30-2-4. This ratio is great of course for high nitrogen and the ratio together will help to prevent burning your lawn. It will continuously feed your lawn until time for a spring feeding.

OCTOBER GARDENING TIPS:

LAWNS-
Ever wonder why golf courses are green year round? Well there's a trick! Overseed warm-season grasses such as centipede or Bermuda with annual ryegrass for a green lawn during the upcoming winter months.

COLOR BEDS-
Remove spent summer annuals, prepare the soil, and plant cool-weather annuals now. Add a balanced slow-release fertilizer and organic matter. Several plants that do well in winter until early summer are Pansy, Viola, Snapdraggons and Ornamental Kale.

FALL GREENS-
It's not too late to sow seeds of mustard, collards, turnips, and lettuce for a fall garden. Prepare the soil with Starter Seed Soil amendment and watch irrigation closely while plants sprout and develop.

09/01/2025

SEPTEMBER GARDENING TIPS:

FALL PLANTING-
Begin planting trees and shrubs this month and next month as well. Planting in autumn allows them time to grow roots and transition into the garden. Be sure to dig your hole 2x bigger than the root ball, loosen entangling root, fill planting hole with site soil and organic matter. Also be sure the top of the root ball is level with the top of the landscape grade. Irrigate daily to every other day and monitor moisture. You should end up irrigating these periodically in winter until spring. If you don't already have a moisture meter they are immensely helpful and prevent overwatering which is the main cause of losing plants.

IRRIGATION-
As temperatures begin to cool plants, trees, shrubs, and lawns need less water. Begin this month by adjusting your watering schedules according to the changes in weather. Pay close attention to containers as they tend to become waterlogged.
