In 1956, in correspondence with Aldous Huxley, British psychiatrist Humphry Osmond coined the term "psychedelic" to describe mind-altering substances. If Huxley got his way, the word may have been "phanerothyme".

"Psychedelic" meant "mind manifesting", according to Osmond, coming from the Greek words that mean "the mind/soul" and "to show".

It first appeared in the March 1957 issue of Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.
