Sometimes the easiest projects make the biggest difference.

I painted this giant @ for my son’s room in a dusty blue pulled from the rest of the color palette. Rolled on two coats of leftover project paint mixed with Paint Transformer and finished with clear wax. Each coat only took me a few minutes.

It’s such a simple way to bring an accent color into a room without painting an entire wall or buying something new.

Already have something in your house that could use a little color? Paint it. 💙

Sometimes the hardware isn’t wrong. It’s just the wrong color. 🖤

I kept the original cup pulls on this console and gave them a quick black refresh instead of replacing them.

The original pulls were perfectly good. The white? Not so much. 😂

Maybe there are other fun ways but these toothpicks did the trick to prop the hardware up on cardboard boxes. 🛸 now I just see little space ships or something from Star Wars

Same color. Same piece. Totally different finish.

The top drawer is Dead Flat Matte.
The bottom is Semi-Gloss.

Both are beautiful. Sheen really is a matter of preference, and for this piece I wanted that soft, velvety matte finish.

But here’s a finishing tip I learned from the pros at Woodcraft of Las Vegas Woodcraft of Las Vegas

If you want the look of matte with a really durable finish underneath, start with semi-gloss.

Turns out General Finishes recommends this technique too. Traditionally, the flattening agents used to create matte finishes could reduce durability, which is why building your finish with semi-gloss and using flat for the final coat has long been a finishing technique.
Here’s what I did:

1. Sprayed two coats of General Finishes High Performance Semi-Gloss.
2. Let each coat fully dry.
3. Lightly sanded with a fine sanding block between coats.
4. Sprayed my final coat in General Finishes High Performance Dead Flat.
5. Let it dry, then gave the piece light use while the finish continued to fully cure.

Always follow the manufacturer’s directions for dry and cure times.

The result? The durability I wanted with that gorgeous, barely-there matte sheen.

The secret to this velvety matte finish? I didn’t start with matte.

For this console, I applied two coats of General Finishes semi-gloss topcoat first to create a strong, clear foundation. Then I finished with GF Dead Flat Matte to take away the shine and give the Chimichurri Green that soft, almost velvet-looking finish.

Durability underneath. Beautiful matte finish on top.

Before you buy new furniture… look at what you already have. 👀

This console was solid, the perfect size for my son’s room, and had exactly the storage he needed. It just didn’t look like it belonged there anymore.

So I gave it a second chance.

Chimichurri Green on the base.
Natural wood + Dark Wax on top.
Matte black hardware.
And one completely different piece of furniture.

The best part? I didn’t sand, strip or prime the painted base. I mixed BB Frösch Paint Transformer into regular latex paint and got to work.

Sandie lived with her orangey oak stairs for 28 years. They were just not her vibe anymore.
