Her name was *Lisa, and she had just come to us from a homeless shelter. She was sick and exhausted - and her face showed it. Her advocate wasted no time in ordering her a vegan meal, a couch to crash on, and the essential oil “Breathe”. When she woke up, she told us: “I’ve never been able to breathe like this in my life.” Then she started talking. She told us stories of her work, her traffickers, and the challenge of raising children while working in a brothel. Come to find out, she was 70-years-old - though you would have never known it from looking at her. The more she talked, the more color returned to her face and her breathing deepened (so did ours, if we’re honest).
When she felt ready, she told us where she wanted to go. We got her a bus ticket and brought her to the bus station. For safety reasons, she had to erase her advocate’s name on her phone (she affectionately referred to her as her “oil lady”), but she promised she would call when she got there. A few hours later, she did - rested, safe, and still full of good food. Humans aren’t all that complicated; sometimes we need a good meal, a good sleep, and a good listener to see the right next step. To all the Lisas out there, we’re thankful you trust us enough to come to us for those things - we’ve got you! And we’re in awe of your bravery in pursuing a life full of deep breaths.
