Why dormant pruning is so important for Pennsylvania oaks?

Pruning PA oak trees in dormancy is a critical health practice, primarily to prevent the spread of a devastating disease called oak wilt. While pruning at any time can improve a tree's structure and health, doing so during the active growing season can have fatal consequences for oaks.

Preventing Oak Wilt
Oak wilt is a fast-spreading and often lethal fungal disease caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum. It invades the tree's vascular system, blocking the flow of water and nutrients.
The Dormancy Solution: During the cold, dormant season (typically late fall through winter), these sap-feeding beetles are inactive. By pruning during this time, you ensure that any fresh cuts on your trees have a chance to dry and begin the healing process before the beetles become active in the spring. This greatly reduces the risk of the fungus being introduced to your tree.

Stay safe Pittsburgh!

Trees are down everywhere and Nassar Tree just wants to remind everyone to be careful. Even though the storm has passed there are MANY unsafe conditons surrounding us.

Please leave the removals and cleanup to the professionals. Even though something may look harmless,
trees can be leaning, the wet ground can be unstable and more unsafe problems can arise.

Nassar Tree and with many of our arborist friends are making rounds and prioritizing safety hazards vs. cleanup.

As always, no matter who helps - check/ ask for insurances. Many unqualified individuals can turn up in moments like these. Stick with reputable companies, they may take some time to get there, but your safety is well worth it.

And finally - be patient. Safety takes time, and our guys are out helping as quickly as they can.
