Ever reach for brown sugar only to find a brick instead?

Here’s a simple kitchen tip: place a slice of bread in your brown sugar container to help maintain moisture and keep it soft. The key is storing it in an airtight container so that moisture stays where it’s supposed to.

I’ve been using these airtight containers for my pantry staples, and they make such a difference. Easier access and less time spent digging through the pantry. Plus, soft brown sugar whenever I need is always a win.

What’s one pantry item that always seems to give you trouble?

Utsunomiya Gyoza-kan 🥟

Had to try gyoza in Utsunomiya, the gyoza capital of Japan!

I ordered the 8-flavor pan-fried gyoza tasting set with rice, and it was a great way to sample some of the city’s famous dumplings. The food arrived quickly, and every gyoza was cooked to a beautiful golden brown.

The wrappers were thin and delicate, becoming wonderfully crisp when pan-fried while staying light and not greasy. Each bite gave way to a juicy, piping-hot filling packed with flavor. The variety included shiso, chive, garlic, and several other unique combinations, making every dumpling a little different from the last.

The biggest surprise was the cheese gyoza. It was actually quite tasty, though its rich flavor stood out from the more traditional varieties.

Crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor - a fun introduction to Utsunomiya’s famous gyoza culture.

Kushiyaki Bistro Fukumimi 🍢

An izakaya is a casual Japanese gastropub where people gather after work to enjoy drinks and share small plates, and Kushiyaki Bistro Fukumimi delivers that experience perfectly.

Tucked away underground in Tokyo, this hidden gem immediately makes an impression. From the moment I walked in, the staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The service throughout the evening was outstanding. Combined with the cozy decor and lively atmosphere, it’s the kind of place you could easily spend hours enjoying.

Every dish I ordered was delicious. Complimentary crackers were provided before I dove into two of their signature dishes. The charcoal-grilled chicken skewer set was freshly made and featured chicken with green onion, chicken with cheese, chicken with shiso leaf and plum sauce, chicken thigh, and chicken with radish sauce. My favorites were the skewers topped with plum sauce and radish scallion sauce.

The potato salad with smoked egg was another standout. Beautifully presented, it arrived with a small spoon so you could mash and mix everything together yourself. The smoky egg added incredible depth and made the dish as fun as it was delicious.

I also ordered the chicken porridge, which was fresh, perfectly seasoned, and packed with flavor.

Between the exceptional staff, vibrant atmosphere, and excellent food, this was a fantastic dining experience.

Thai food in Japan 🇹🇭🇯🇵

Stopped by Tinun and ordered the half-and-half set: spicy tom yum noodles with prawns alongside spicy minced chicken with basil, served with rice and a fried egg.

The tom yum broth was rich, tangy, and packed with flavor, while the noodles had the perfect chewy texture. The basil chicken brought plenty of heat and paired perfectly with the rice and egg. Portion sizes were generous, making it a very satisfying meal.

This isn’t a fancy restaurant, but it’s a great spot for classic Thai food with a solid selection of popular dishes. A thoughtful touch was the paper aprons they provided to keep the flavorful soup from splashing on your clothes.

If you’re craving authentic Thai flavors in Japan, this place definitely delivers.

The Standing Sushi Bar Tokyo 🍣

Edomae sushi just steps from Higashi-Ginza Station. This cozy little spot lives up to its name with standing-room service, though we were lucky enough to grab seats just before it filled up. The entire restaurant seats only 6 guests, giving it an intimate feel.

I ordered the dinner set, which included 10 pieces of sushi and a bowl of miso soup. The fish was exceptionally fresh, with generous cuts and excellent flavor in every bite. Each piece was carefully prepared and served quickly, making for a smooth and enjoyable dining experience. Even the miso soup stood out - tasty and full of flavor.

A fantastic place for fresh, high-quality sushi in Tokyo.

Indian food in Japan 🇯🇵✨ Tried lunch at DIYA Tokyo and it did not disappoint. I ordered the mixed grill lunch set, which came with 2 curries, 2 grilled meats, naan, rice, and a salad.

For the curries, I went with the spicy Hyderabadi Keema and the Prawn Curry - both flavorful and definitely hit the spot. And of course, I had to get a mango lassi 🥭

Good atmosphere, tasty food, and fast, friendly service. A solid option if you’re craving Indian food while in Tokyo.

Can’t say you’ve been to Japan without having ramen, right? 🍜🇯🇵

Stopped by Ramen Kagetsu Arashi (Ginza Corridor) and had the Arashi Genkotsu Barikara Super Spicy Ramen - absolutely delicious and exactly what I was craving. Perfect level of spice, rich flavorful broth that hit just right, and noodles with that ideal chewy texture that paired beautifully with the soup. Would definitely go back.

And shoutout to the couple sitting next to us who recommended the garlic butter fried rice - if we ever run into you again, thank you 😂 10/10. It came out sizzling in a clay pot with egg, shrimp, perfectly seasoned rice, and that beautiful light crispy bottom. Really, really good.

Found a tasty lunch spot at Tentora - a charming bar-style Japanese restaurant with convenient access right by Tokyo station.

I had the lunch set with assorted tempura and cold soba, and it was delicious. The tempura was light and crispy without feeling too heavy, and the cold soba was refreshing and paired perfectly with it. Simple, satisfying, and exactly the kind of meal that hits the spot on a hot day exploring Tokyo.

These Miso Deviled Eggs are a staple at our holiday parties! 🐣 Creamy egg yolks get a savory upgrade with a touch of miso, creating a rich, umami-packed bite that keeps everyone coming back for more. They always disappear - no matter how many I make!

INGREDIENTS
12 eggs
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon white miso paste
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon mirin
1 teaspoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
3/4 teaspoon mushroom seasoning
Scallions, to garnish
Sesame seeds, to garnish

INSTRUCTIONS
Place eggs in a single layer in a pot. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 8 minutes.
Run eggs under cold water for 1 minute to cool before peeling. Alternatively, transfer the eggs to an ice bath and let cool before peeling.
Peel the eggs and slice them in half lengthwise.
Gently remove the yolks and place them in a mixing bowl.
Arrange the egg whites on a serving platter.
Mash the yolks with a fork until crumbly. Add the mayonnaise, miso paste, soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, sesame oil, pepper, and mushroom seasoning. Mix until smooth and creamy.
Spoon or pipe the yolk mixture into the egg white halves. Use a piping bag with a star tip for a decorative touch or a resealable bag with the corner snipped off for easy filling.
Garnish the filled eggs with sesame seeds and scallions.
Refrigerate for 15 minutes before serving.
