I saw a dog on the beach today, a little one.
I noticed him because the girls and I were sitting in a dune watching the World. My girls are not used to the big world yet and I’m so proud of how brave they are being, out in it.
Anyway this little dog was trailing behind two people walking along the beach. It was warm this morning so he may have been hot. He may have been sore. Tired. Old.
At one point he stopped and watched them, clearly wanting to stop the walk but no one looked back at him so he plodded on after them.
Now the dog was not being harmed, abused, anything. He was having an off lead walk on a lovely beach in the sunshine.
The situation was heartbreaking to watch though. Saddening.
When I was in Columbia on my plant medicine retreat I was told that I am undoubtedly here for the animals. To help them through the difficulties of being here with us humans.
My question is this.
What can we do, how can we make a difference so that dogs are heard, listened to, observed and protected?
So that people learn the lessons that dogs are bringing to them? To slow down, to live gently and simply, to love each other.
As I’m writing this I have been gifted the answer.
We treat ourselves with love, we treat those closest with the compassion we want to see in the world. And we light the darkness one dog and one person at a time.
