This is a public service announcement 😆 🤣. I was just talking to someone the other day on this topic and informing them and it shocks me to think how many people have jumped on this "rain barrel" fad without proper industry knowledge. So the whole idea was based off of farmers. They a lot of time put gutters on there outbuildings and run the downspouts to their cattle troffs. Brilliant use of rain water. For one reason only, they have metal roofs. For those of you adding these "rain barrels" to your residential home to water the garden, or water pets at a discounted rate, STOP. DO NOT give this water to your pets or poison your plants. It's water, it's cheap, use your garden hose. When the rain falls on your roof, it washes down the ASPHALT from your shingles, along with manufacturing chemicals. Your roof is meant to shed water, oil based products do that. This is NOT water that is safe for consumption by anything after it has traveled down your roof, unless you plan on adding additional water filtration. So leave the water collection to metal roofs. Save the water from your barn. But please, from a water diversion technician... do not drink the water that comes of your asphalt shingled roof!! 🤢🤮 this is a one day old gutter system, no rain, just from the morning dew. Rant over 😆

Gutters surely help in general, but incorrectly sized gutters can lead to additional moisture that runs right into your foundation and leaks through the walls.
