A lifetimes work! Don’t take that honey for granted! 🐝🐝

03/21/2023

I pride myself on being honest so I’m going to tell you the truth — right now, I am burnt out.

Posting your life on social media is inviting people into your life, your home. Only the rooms you’ve left unlocked, but still, your home.

Eight years of near-daily blogging has turned me paranoid. Before I click “post” on every text and photo, I’m inundated with thoughts of the many criticisms internet strangers are about to cast onto me and my life.

…Sh*t, I missed that dirt under Charlie’s fingernails.
…Oh god, Jude already wore this shirt once this week.
…Ugh, they’re gonna have a field day with those dirty dishes in the sink.

Other people’s voices, thought by my brain. Years of nitpicking, “constructive criticism,” and sometimes, outright abuse. Some comments are made in good faith — but odds are if one person’s sent their helpful suggestion, 58 others have too…and 50 of ‘em are not so nice.

There are some things I post that I know are controversial. Things that should never have been controversial in the first place. But these things, they’re important to me. They’re important to me and the hundred thousand people who follow me exactly because I don’t shy away from speaking about them.

So, in that spirit, once again, here’s what I believe in:

⁃ Parents have every right to speak about autism, even if they’re not autistic. They, too, have a valuable perspective in the autism universe.

⁃ I don’t care if people use functioning labels or don’t use functioning labels. I care if you try to tell me how to speak about anything but you.

⁃ ABA isn’t perfect, but one bad therapist doesn’t make the entire field abusive. ABA has helped my son, Charlie, and many others, a lot.

⁃ Use the puzzle piece symbol. Or the infinity loop. The color blue. The color red. I don’t care.

⁃ Person-first or identity-first language? Everyone can choose for themself.

⁃ People are NOT all equally autistic — some are more severely affected than others.

⁃ Diagnoses should be made more accessible, especially for adults, but that doesn’t mean self-diagnosis is valid. Confirmation bias and the many other conditions with overlapping symptoms are just two reasons why.

I don’t follow the hive mind. Every autistic is an expert on their own autism, meaning that is whom they should feel free to speak about. No one can speak for the entire autistic community.

If your or your group’s advocacy relies on bullying people into silence, this means that your ideas don’t stand up on their own.

I deleted my Twitter account because it’s a petri-dish of radioactive bullies, but I’m not going anywhere. I’m not giving up because of the one obvious vocal minority.

If you’re here, thank you. I couldn’t do it without your support, private or public.

Spring has begun on our homestead.

We welcomed 5 Nigerian dwarf kids (baby goats) to our heard this week.
A few baby chicks from our very own layers.
Loaded up two incubators over flowing with eggs to fulfill my growing list of orders for baby chicks.

Sold several dozen eggs.

And last but certain not least Miss Benelli planted our first batch of Organic Non-GMO seeds which will be ready for our warm, cozy greenhouse and spring time sales!

It has been many days, months and years of sweat and tears, trials and errors, joys and successes, prayers & more prayers to get to this point but we are excited to see this dream become a reality.

Interested in purchasing eggs, chicks or organic Non-GMO seedlings for your summer garden please each out, we are happy to help serve our local consumers.

While we all know that indulging in lots of sugary treats, drinking soda, and eating bread can negatively impact our health, the oral microbiome of post-menopausal women really takes a hit.

It is about quality & animal husbandry.

Purchasing cheap doesn’t mean you’re getting a good deal.
Purchasing cheap meat usually means the animals were kept in poor conditions, not Manged well or loved by their owners, just a paycheck.

With every animals on our farm, with every egg dropped, every milking session, every life hatched, every animal butchered, the care put into these animals is a great effort of blood sweat and tears. My love for animals is right up their with our children, of course our children come first but every animal‘s life matters, their comfort and care is always accounted for.

A CONVERSATION ABOUT PERCEIVED VALUE:

A customer asked me how much it would cost for a pasture raised chicken.

I gave them a price of $4/ lb.

The customer responded: That’s seems really high.

I asked: What do you think is a reasonable price for this?

The customer answered: $2 maximum

I responded: Ok, then I invite you to grow it yourself.

The customer answered: I don't know how to.

I responded: Alright, then how about for $2 /lb, I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you $2 / lb, you'll learn valuable skills that will benefit you in the future.

The customer answered: Sounds good! Let’s do it!

I responded: Great! To get started, you are going to need some things. You will need a day old broiler chicken, 12 lb. of quality feed, feeders, waterers, an area inside to raise this bird for the first 3 weeks, electricity for this indoor area, a quality pasture area for this bird to live on for its remaining 4 weeks, an outdoor shelter, countless gallons of water, electric poultry fencing to protect this bird, etc. Not to mention, there is a very real possibility that your single chicken, doesnt survive the 8 weeks it takes to grow. Injury, illness, and unexpected weather conditions are always present. Now, you are back to square 1.

The customer answered: But I don't have any of those things and I can't justify buying all of these for one chicken.

I responded: Ok. Well then for an additional $1.50 / lb, I can rent my supplies, building, and pasture to you to use to grow this little chick.

The customer answered: Okay. That’s fair.

I responded: Great! We will start the project on Monday.

The customer answered: I work Monday through Friday. I’m only available on the weekends.

I responded: If you want to learn from me then you will need to work when I work. This project will take 8 weeks, so you will need to be here at least an hour every day for the next 56 days.

The customer answered: That means I’m going to have to sacrifice my time for 56 days.

I responded: That’s true. Remember, when you do a job yourself you need to account for unproductive factors.

The customer answered: What do you mean by that?

I responded: Raising a chicken completely from start to finish includes time spent to plan the project, pick up materials, travel time, gas, set up time, clean up, and waste disposal amongst other things. That’s all in addition to the actual project itself. And speaking of materials, that’s where we will start on Monday so I need you to meet me at the feed at 6:00am.

The customer answered: At 6am?!! My work day doesn’t usually start until 8am!

I responded: Well then you’re in luck! The Chick shipment will arrive at 8am. We'll start then, but to do so we have to start at 6am to get materials picked up, loaded and delivered to the farm. Then I need you back here after you've worked all day to move your bird to fresh pasture every day. Saturday and Sunday included. No days off here.

The customer answered: You know, I’m realizing that a lot more goes in to quality food than what a customer sees in the finished project. Your proposal of $4 / pound is very reasonable. I would like you to grow my chicken.

CONCLUSION:

When you pay for a job, especially a custom job, (whether it’s a physical project or digital project or GROWING AND RAISING FOOD) you pay not only for the material and the work to be completed. You also pay for:

✔️ Knowledge
✔️ Experience
✔️ Custom Skills
✔️ Tools
✔️ Time to plan
✔️ Time to prepare
✔️ Professionalism
✔️ Work Ethic
✔️ Excellence
✔️ Discipline
✔️ Commitment
✔️ Integrity
✔️ Taxes
✔️ Licenses
✔️ Sacrifices
✔️ Liabilities
✔️ Insurance

If you desire fresh, healthy, locally grown food, please don’t disrespect a farmer by trying to get them to lower their prices.

If their proposal exceeds your budget, there’s nothing wrong with going elsewhere.

Just remember.. you get what you pay for.

👉🏼 FARMERS: Know your worth and be confident in it.

👉🏼 CONSUMERS: Recognize their worth and be respectful of it.

Sharing this to support all my friends, family and clients who are Farmers, Entrepreneurs, Business Owners and Tradesman.

Beyond growing plants, we are building a homestead.
Sustainability.
Ethically raised.
Organic nutrition.
Space to stretch their legs.

Our inspiration is held with getting back to the roots of our ancestors, eating God’s food, hunter gatherer.
Our other Inspiration is our daughter with Autism.
Nutrtion is key for children with Autism.
90% of people with Autism are unemployed, to ensure a future for her we are helping her build one. Dakota gardens with me, helps with chores, butchering, grinding tomatoes or meat, the girl is not afraid to get dirty and work.

Big Dreams start small and we are small but the drive the determination is never ending.
Build a future beyond the why.

Happy Sunday.
