Gardening is in my DNA. When my grandfather came to this country he worked in the citrus groves of Southern California. My mother has a degree in botany and together went on many plant collecting adventures. Also, growing up in Northern California we had a HUGE garden complete with apricot and plumb trees. Now living in Kansas we have our own slice of heaven on just over an acre of land. I've got
4 peach trees, an apple tree with 5 different kinds of apples (the most EXPENSIVE plant purchase I've ever made), two other apple trees: fuji and honey crisp. We have raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries. We also have 6 raised beds with our vegetables for the season and one flower cutting bed with gladiolas, dahlias, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias, and some pumpkin and melon seeds. We make jams, jellies, peach brandy, and blackberry moonshine. I've been a teacher for most of my career teaching science: Biology, Forensic Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science. I love kids, have two grown ones of my own, and encourage all to get out and dig in the dirt. I'll have some postings on how to get your little peeps out into the garden even if your yard is small or you live in an apartment. I also have bi-annual plant sale full of friendly, low maintainence plants. Information and photos provided here. My goal is to have food available to pollinators for three seasons.
