I was truly honored to speak with Pam George from Delaware Today about my experience in this area of design that has shaped so much of my professional journey. I am grateful to Delaware Today and to Pam for the opportunity to bring visibility to such an important topic.

About 20 years ago, I was involved in the early stages of adapting bank branches to better serve seniors and individuals with special needs. During that time, I traveled to different cities, met with professionals working inside those branches, and most importantly, listened to the people who used those spaces every day.

That experience changed the way I see design.

It was then that I began to understand something that still guides my work today: the way we use space is the first premise for creating comfort, autonomy, and dignity at every stage of life.

Space is not just about aesthetics.
Space is safety.
Space is independence.
Space is respect.

As I observed older adults navigating unnecessary steps, counters that were too high, or inaccessible restrooms, I realized that many of the challenges of aging are not only physical — they are environmental. Poorly designed spaces limit people. Thoughtfully designed spaces empower them.

When our children are born, we adapt our homes. We cover outlets, install gates, choose safer flooring, and intentionally design environments that protect them as they grow. We do this with love and care.

So why don’t we apply that same level of intention as we age?

Aging is a privilege. Designing for this stage of life should not be seen as a loss, but as wisdom. Wider circulation areas, proper lighting, accessible bathrooms, non-slip flooring, and functional layouts do not take away from beauty — they add purpose to it.

Architecture has the power to anticipate needs, preserve independence, and allow people to remain in their homes safely and with dignity for years to come.

Good design is future care.

And perhaps ultimate luxury is the freedom to continue living independently within your own space.

A 1900-built home. 1,800 sq ft. Brick walls uncovered, preserved, and celebrated. Original white-oak floors and trim refinished back to life. Pallet-wood accents adding warmth and personality.

A challenging design, a meticulous restoration—but the kind that reminds you why you love what you do.
I kept the design simple so the house could proudly tell its own story.

Wall color: Moderne White SW 6168

✨ Small edits, big transformations.
A powder room still holding onto its original 1925 pink—and we kept it that way, with no unnecessary demolition.
Just tile-safe paint, wallpaper, a new sink, and a gold faucet.
Preserving is also transforming. 🌸

Less impact, more beauty. More story, less waste.

The essence of this project was to create an architecture that met the needs for comfort and privacy of a family of four, seeking a countryside retreat. The design balances the robustness of the country style with the lightness of bright colors (beige and brown), resulting in a welcoming and timeless residence.
The focus of the site layout was to maximize the use of the outdoor areas, transforming the land into a dedicated playground and resting area for the family.

In 2008, we designed a 4-hectare refuge in the Atlantic Forest for a family of four. A small house, positioned at the highest point to celebrate the view, with open spaces and glass doors to undo the boundaries between the home and the forest.

The highlight? A Japanese hot tur, integrated balconies and an outdoor living area larger than the house itself! For them, the ideal home was an invitation to nature, where architecture was integrated, without competing.

The lesson is clear: There are no formulas. There is only what makes sense to you. The home is a reflection of your essence. Connect with your memories and your sense of belonging to discover what really matters in your way of living.

This story and the reflection on the meaning of home are in my book! ✨link in my bio

Ever walk into a space and feel an instant sense of calm without knowing why? 🌿✨
That’s biophilic design — bringing nature into our homes through light, plants, natural materials, and organic shapes.
It creates spaces that feel alive, soothing, and deeply connected to us. 🌱💛

Do you use any biophilic elements at home? Show me your favorite corner in the comments! 👇✨

I get so happy every time I receive a review, a message, or even a phone call about my book — it truly touches my heart. 💛
These are real stories, written with honesty and emotion. It’s a short and easy read, but full of soul.

One of my readers — who I originally gifted a copy to — told me it’s the perfect housewarming or Christmas gift! 🎁✨
She loved it so much she even bought more copies for her friends and family. Moments like this truly warm my heart and remind me why I wrote this book in the first place. 💫

If you’ve read it too, I’d love to hear what you think!
