The Beauty and Advantages of Brazilian Cedar:

Brazilian cedar is one of those materials that reveals itself slowly — pale and fresh off the saw, then deepening over years into a rich reddish-amber that feels like it was always meant to be there. The natural oils that give it that subtle, signature fragrance aren’t just beautiful — they’re functional, making the wood inherently resistant to moisture, insects, and decay in a way that synthetic finishes simply can’t replicate. The way the grain catches light across a planked ceiling or wide-panel wall, the warmth it brings to brick and aged iron — it’s the kind of finish that makes a space feel genuinely lived in from day one.

In a carriage house conversion, that matters. The bones of the building already have a story, and the New England climate doesn’t forgive materials that aren’t built to last. Brazilian cedar doesn’t compete with that history — it honors it, and gets better with every season that passes.

Due to demand and recent expansion NEDC is hiring Project Managers — someone who takes ownership, leads with craft, and delivers results that discerning clients remember for life.

Full-time. Competitive salary. Company vehicle. Profit sharing. And work you’ll actually be proud of.

At NEDC our Project Managers are experienced, professional and extremely caring—they tend to be loved by our clients. NEDC Project Manager Joe Souza is prime example. These meaningful words show this—an unsolicited email from these truly wonderful clients (and now life-long friends):

“I also wanted to stress a message to potential clients. That entering into the design-build process with NEDC is an opportunity to enter into a relationship that will leave lasting wonderful memories for years to come.

What is better than looking at a room, a molding, or even a switch and remember the discussions and excitement of a vision for a space, set of spaces, or entire home, come to life, for living with joy!

Having been through this process many times I know as a client what it feels like to have a room evoke good (vs. bad) memories after a construction project!”

Happy Earth Day 🌎

A beautiful NEDC Passive House custom retrofit in Somerville, Mass.  This project involved the conversion of a standard two-family home into a custom single family Passive House—designed exactly to client taste and planned to generate a carbon footprint of nearly zero.

This is verified as the first and one & only single family retrofitted Passive House in Massachusetts. There have been other retrofitted Passive Houses, but no single families.  This is the first of its kind.

The clients are both local creative artists who simultaneously took an uninspiring Victorian style home with vinyl siding and (with our help) transformed it into a joyful expression of themselves... all while keeping with the playful character of the original home and neighborhood.

The home itself is now a work of art: vibrant, elegant, and a unique love letter to sustainability and the beauty of our Earth.

This family is setting an example for others in Massachusetts and beyond to pursue the epitome of energy efficiency (and the benefits of health, comfort & social responsibility that brings), it being the first of its kind and this was an intention of theirs.

NEDC was challenged to achieve a precise joyous and creative aesthetic the clients desired within the exacting sustainable framework and requirements of a Certified Passive House—essentially the gold standard of an eco home in today’s built environment.

With young children and full professional lives, the family wasn’t looking for a far-off retreat—they were looking for a place to slow down and reconnect at home. A space where they could cook meals outdoors, watch their kids play, gather with friends, or simply enjoy quiet moments together after a long day. What they really wanted was a sanctuary: a welcoming, well-designed extension of their home that would make everyday life feel a little more relaxed and a little more beautiful, in every season.

The house, built in 2002, sits on a steeply sloped lot that had long made the backyard difficult to access and underused. Our challenge was to reimagine the space as a cohesive, four-season outdoor living area that felt both natural and elevated.

At the center of the design is a custom, heated in-ground pool—an uncommon feature in our New England climate—equipped with both an auto cover and insulated manual cover to maximize energy efficiency. Porcelain paver decking, integrated with snow-melt cables, allows the space to remain usable and safe through winter.

To create a seamless client experience, we partnered with our trusted colleagues at NEDC (New England Design & Construction) to design and install a custom home addition embracing a screened-in porch with retractable screens and radiant heat beneath matching pavers—allowing it to function as both an enclosed retreat and an open-air gathering space.

NEDC honored the modern Greek revival style by extending the existing colonnade on the left side of the house and then wrapping it around the porch addition in the back, as if it had always been there.
