My favorite part of these nights is that nobody has to be there.

After spending all week together, this crew still chooses to show up with their spouses, their kids, lawn chairs, food, and a willingness to get way too competitive over volleyball and kubb.

I think that says more about who they are than anything we could write.

You can hire skill. You can teach systems.

You can't manufacture people who genuinely enjoy doing life together.

Watching everyone hang out while the kids ran around until dark reminded me that what we're building at KCS is bigger than remodeling houses.

This project started like many bathroom remodels. The homeowners wanted a fresh, updated space with a larger custom shower, beautiful tile, new cabinetry, lighting, and a design that better fit their home.

Then we opened the walls.

We discovered that the original shower window had never been properly flashed by the builder, allowing water to damage the exterior sheathing over time. As we investigated further, we found another window with the same issue.

At that point, this wasn't just about creating a beautiful bathroom anymore - it was about protecting the home.

So before installing a single piece of tile, we:

✔️ Removed the damaged sheathing
✔️ Repaired the framing
✔️ Installed a brand-new shower window
✔️ Properly flashed both windows
✔️ Replaced the house wrap and siding to restore the exterior correctly

Only then did we move on to the fun part.

The finished bathroom now features:

✨ A custom tiled shower with a Schlueter line drain
✨ Large-format tile that flows seamlessly from the shower throughout the floor
✨ New custom vanity and linen cabinetry
✨ LED-lit mirrors and updated lighting
✨ Fresh paint and new fixtures throughout

The finished space is beautiful.

But what we're most proud of is what happened behind the walls - because great remodeling isn't just about what looks good today. It's about making sure it lasts for years to come.

It's amazing what happens when you update the details instead of changing the entire house. 🤩

This A-frame already had incredible architecture:
✔️ Vaulted ceilings
✔️ Exposed wood
✔️ Loft overlooking the living room

But the original railings and finishes made the space feel dated.

One of the biggest transformations? Three separate staircases and railing systems throughout the home.

We transformed this space with:
• Custom red oak and black steel railings
• Rebuilt stair components and new treads
• Fresh cabinet paint
• Board and batten accents
• Updated lighting details

The result feels modern, warm, and intentional, while still keeping everything that made this home unique.

The funny thing is, if you asked someone what changed here, they might say, "Everything."

But really, it was a hundred thoughtful details working together.

And that's what great remodeling is all about. Not chasing trends, but creating a home that feels like you every time you walk through the door.

One of our favorite questions to ask homeowners after a remodel is:

"What ended up being your favorite part?"

Surprisingly, it's not always the thing they spent the most money on.

A lot of times it's the heated floor they step onto every morning. The shower niche that keeps everything organized. The under-cabinet lights they turn on every evening. The pull-out shelf that finally makes that deep cabinet usable.

It's usually the little things.

Builder-grade bathrooms usually all feel the same.

The standard tub insert.
The bulky thresholds.
The basic finishes that technically work… but never really feel relaxing, custom, or elevated.

This remodel completely changed that.

We replaced the basic insert with a custom large format tile shower, recessed shower pan, seamless entry transition, recessed niches, frameless glass, and updated finishes throughout.

Now the space feels:
✔ More open
✔ More modern
✔ Easier to clean
✔ More spa-like
✔ More like *their* home

One of our favorite parts of remodeling is helping homeowners move beyond the “builder-grade” feeling and create spaces that actually reflect their style and how they want their home to feel every day.

The large format tile, warm wood vanity, soft lighting, and seamless shower entry completely transformed this bathroom into a space that feels calm, inviting, and intentionally theirs instead of something pulled from a standard builder package.

Things we found behind walls on jobsites this week: “Glad We Caught That” edition 👀

Things like these are the biggest reasons we believe remodeling is about more than just making a space look beautiful.

If something seems off when we start opening things up, we’ll often suggest opening things up further to investigate potential hazards or shortcuts that may have been taken in previous renovations.

And when we do find issues, we will always take the time to slow down, make the appropriate changes, and do things the right way.

Because once the drywall goes back up, those hidden details still matter.

There’s something special about bringing an old home back to life… but it doesn’t come without challenges.

This pre-1900 home had:
• Outdated finishes from decades ago
• No insulation (hello drafts + high energy bills)
• An inefficient layout that just didn’t fit modern life

It wasn’t just about making it look better, it was about making it work better.

So we:
✔️ Reworked the kitchen layout to create a more functional flow
✔️ Updated both bathrooms for everyday usability
✔️ Opened up and improved key spaces throughout the home
✔️ Addressed what you don’t always see (like insulation + structure) to make it comfortable long-term

This one turned into a full home transformation, and a space that finally supports the way this family lives day to day.
