Let’s Talk About Carpenter Ants & Trees 🐜🌳

Carpenter ants don't typically attack healthy wood. Instead, they're attracted to wood that's already been compromised by decay, moisture, or internal damage. Think of them as a symptom of a problem, not the cause.

Hidden inside this tree were extensive galleries carved out by carpenter ants, along with significant internal decay. Over time, that combination weakened the tree's structural integrity and increased the risk of failure.

This tree is an another great reminder that what's happening inside a tree matters just as much as what we see on the outside.

This tree looked fairly normal from a distance, but once it was removed, the story changed dramatically. The center was heavily decayed, leaving a hollow core and much less structural strength than the tree appeared to have.

Rot is one of the biggest reasons we encourage homeowners to address questionable trees sooner rather than later. As decay progresses:

🌲 Trees become weaker and more prone to failure
❄️ Wind, snow, and ice loads become more dangerous
💰Removal becomes more complicated and costly
📈 The risk to homes, sheds, vehicles, and people increases

The challenge is that trees don't always show obvious warning signs until the damage is extensive. A tree can still leaf out and look healthy while significant decay is occurring inside.

The good news? Catching issues early gives you more options and often makes the removal process safer and more predictable.

Last week’s tree removal challenge: one rotted pine tree, one very nervous-looking shed, and a garden that definitely didn’t sign up for excitement. 😅🌲

Happy to report the tree came down safely and with precision — no sheds were squished, no gardens were flattened, and no innocent landscaping was harmed in the making of this removal. 👏
