This time of year, I just realized,
Is my favorite.
Flowers are bursting forth everywhere
And the garden is ripe for harvest.

Inchelium red, soft neck garlic.
The wind blew them over early
The rain sped up the leaf decomposition
So harvest time was thrown off
But still, the heads are large
And pungent.

We plant early November
In compost amended soil.
Mulched heavily once leaves are up well
And then only monitor & water
Until the bountiful harvest.

I learned from a garlic grower online
To pull off the outer dirty leaf at harvest
Then let them cure
And save yourself hours
of tedious dry, dirty skin removal.
It’s worked well for us for years
But I wonder if anyone has a different experience?

Thank you to everyone who showed, supported local growers and are helping make the world a friendlier place, one native plant, one connection, at a time.

Come swap native seeds, make a pinecone bird feeder, get native plants from local growers, do a scavenger to get a prize and go on a wander in the garden to better understand what it means to plant for the future with native plants!
P.S. We need more volunteers. Get a free plant if you send a half hour helping with pinecone birdfeeders, seed swapping and the scavenger hunt.

Large milkweed bugs are plentiful this year. We let them be as we never spray our native plants with anything at all. The bugs are said to only feed on milkweed without doing too much harm, and it is for the insects that we plant the milkweed, so here we are, more life created.
