Here at Natural State Horticare, gardening is a big part of what inspired us to do what we do. Gardening got us outdoors, taught us to re-think where our food comes from, taught us self fulfillment, taught us the importance of sustainability, and because of our apprenticeship at Little Rock Urban Farming, taught us the importance of an
involvement in the community. These are all things we wanted to be able to share with others in hopes that together, we can live happier, healthier and more involved lives. Along the way we were fortunate enough to meet Dr. Robyn Zynser and her husband, Jim Pfeiffer. These are two people that are also passionate about gardening and an involvement in the community. Fortunately, there just so happen to be an empty lot adjacent to Dr. Zynser’s chiropractic clinic, so we pitched the idea of a neighborhood garden to them and they immediately said yes. So with their generosity and support the Heights Neighborhood Garden was born. We wanted to take a different approach in a way that not only will it be a community garden, but a place to learn about gardening. Every Saturday, for 2 hours, we will have an onsite organic gardening expert available to plot holders to help answer any questions you may have about the most effective, productive and sustainable ways to garden organically. The day/time of the week may vary in order to accommodate the schedules of our gardeners, but will primarily be on Saturday. At the beginning of each week we will post to the Heights Neighborhood Garden page to inform plot holders of what time our gardening expert will be onsite. If you have a question that week, but aren’t able to make it during the 2 hour window, we will be available to answer your questions via email at [email protected]. We also encourage plot holders to get to know one another and share gardening tips, after all, that is what this neighborhood garden is all about! There will be two different lease options available at the Heights Neighborhood Garden: Quarterly at $55 a month, and yearly at $45 a month. The yearly lease basically gives you 3 months of the year for free and also guarantees the chance to keep your plot for the following year. If you pay the entirety of your lease agreement up front, you will receive a 10% discount. The raised bed plots will all be 4’x8’ and made out of cedar. Water, gardening lessons and even row covers, for the serious winter gardeners, are all included. We will also be the care takers of the property so that the plot holders do not have any responsibility outside of their personal plot, though picking up any noticeable trash would be nice. At various times we will have propagated seasonal plants available for purchase onsite to help jump start your crop production. We want this to be the best neighborhood garden that it can be, so suggestions are welcome at [email protected]. Space, practicality and relevance to plot holders as a whole will be the main determining factor for all considerations.
