Last Friday I had the honor of arranging a bouquet for this beautiful bride 💐

It is the coolest thing in the world to me that something I poured so much love into growing got to be part of her most special day, full of love and connection.

She was sweet enough to share some photos of the big day with me and I loved getting to see how everything came together. 💛 Wishing many years of happiness to these two.

This morning I found this imposter masquerading as a carrot in my garden bed and so I thought I’d take a moment to share some foraging awareness 🌿

This is hemlock and is EXTREMELY toxic. ☠️ It sometimes pops up in even the tidiest gardens thanks to wind or birds dropping seeds and can look very similar to carrots, parsnips, parsley and other harmless plants like cow parsley and wild carrots. It’s ALWAYS important to 100% identify what you’re eating before you take a bite so here are some helpful tips to identify :

1. Hemlock stems are hollow, round and have distinctive purple blotches on a green stem.

2. Hemlock leaves have a slightly glossy sheen, finer leaves, and a more feathery appearance than their non-toxic look a-likes.

3. Hemlock flowers are in an umbel, are around 2 – 5cm across and come out in June and July.

4. Hemlock typically grows up to 2m tall.

5. Hemlock has a strong, musty, and unpleasant smell.

6. Ingesting even the smallest amount is extremely serious and you should get to the ER immediately. - bag the remaining plant and bring it with you to help hospital staff be able to identify and assist you as quickly as possible.

7. If handling it for removal always wear gloves, and be sure to remove the entire root BEFORE it flowers to prevent it from spreading.

8. Hemlock is found in every US state with the exception of Hawaii, Florida, Alaska, and Mississippi.

🌱Unless you are absolutely certain you know what it is, don’t eat any foraged plants.
