Laundry rooms deserve good design too.

This bright, cheerful space by Penny Higgins of proves that even the most functional rooms in a home can have personality. Colorful cabinetry, playful finishes, and a clean quartz countertop create a space that feels intentional rather than purely utilitarian.

The countertop was fabricated from a remnant, which is one of the smartest ways to use stone in smaller spaces like laundry rooms, powder baths, or bars. A great design moment without needing a full slab.

Design intelligence is not always about using more material.

Before any slab is cut, the planning begins.

After templating, our team creates a digital layout to review seam placement, panel sizing, and overall aesthetics. This step allows us to confirm the design and ensure everything is aligned before fabrication begins.

For this project we used 6 mm porcelain panels, with a miter wrapped beam detail to maintain a clean and continuous look throughout the shower.

Porcelain over traditional tile creates a more seamless aesthetic with fewer grout lines, allowing the material and design to take center stage.

When designing a shower, one question comes up more often than you might think:

What comes first, tile or stone?

The answer may surprise you.
Stone comes first.

In showers like this one, the Taj Mahal quartzite bench and niche shelves are installed before tile begins. Planning for stone early allows us to properly template, fabricate, and most importantly, create the correct slope so water drains instead of pooling.

When tile is installed first, it can limit the space we have to work with, making it difficult to achieve proper pitch and clean detailing. Installing stone first allows:

• Proper water runoff and long-term performance
• Cleaner, tighter finished edges
• Easier installation for tile setters
• A more refined, seamless final result

Tile can be beautifully cut to meet smooth stone surfaces, while fitting stone around textured tile often compromises precision and finish quality.

Great design is not just about materials. It is about sequence and planning.
