This chimney pipe did not utilize the correct components when it was installed. What you’re seeing is called Pyrolysis. Chimney manufacturers require a set clearance to combustibles for a reason.

Over time the ignition temperature of wood lowers when it’s exposed to the high heat of chimney pipe. Without the proper components in place, the combustibles will ignite. It might not be today, nor tomorrow. But it will happen.

If you purchased a Drolet wood stove or insert in 2025, and it qualified for the USA Biomass Tax Credit (that expired in December), you'll need a four-digit pin for the manufacturer.

That pin for Drolet's qualifying stoves and inserts is G3B8.
