I planted only 1 Euphorbia characias in the backyard 4 years ago, it has taken over kinda without proper irrigation, getting borrowed water from close by shrubs but I am liking it 🥰 rain has definitely enhanced the chartreuse green colors everywhere in the yard..

My heart is heavy thinking about the devastating and the lives and landscapes forever changed. It’s a stark reminder of how fragile and precious nature is, and how much we should treasure the beauty around us.
Stepping outside in my garden, I found comfort and calm pulling weeds from the yard (shiny geraniums and oxalis weeds have started showing up). It felt grounding, a small act of care for the earth while holding those affected in my thoughts. Let’s cherish and nurture the spaces we have, as a way to honor the resilience of both people and nature.

Ending 2024 with a visit to the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden. Though the gift shop was closed, the trails offered plenty to explore!

What stood out?
Their firescaping zones, designed to educate visitors with clear visual markers, and the impressive Cal native plant collections, complemented by displays of South African, Australian, and Chilean flora.

A unique highlight at this time of the year here was the succulent collection—the most extensive collection with labeled names I’ve seen in any garden this year! While the garden isn’t massive, the charm is undeniable, and an extension is already in the works.

Bonus? The glass art installations bring a vibrant, seasonal touch to the landscape.

- Santa Barbara Botanical Garden -
We spent half a day exploring the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden, home to the largest collection of California native plants we’ve seen! It seems they’re expanding even more areas into natives, which is exciting to see. The conservation building was high-tech and impressive, but the real treat was the views of the Channel Islands.

The plant community focus on the islands was fascinating—I wish we had more time to explore! Definitely a reason to return and see the incredible work scientists and researchers are doing here. The idea to explore the coastal botanical gardens on this trip came from membership perks. Free admission for the members and donations are always welcome to promote the conservation research work these botanical gardens are doing..

Joshua Tree

The Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) is a slow-growing species, adding about 1 inch per year in height. Found in USDA zones 8-10, these trees thrive in the arid, high deserts of the southwest, especially in the Mojave Desert.

They prefer sandy, well-drained soils and require minimal water, flourishing in hot summers and cool winters. With a lifespan of up to 150 years or more.

These iconic trees are a vital part of the Mojave desert ecosystems, offering habitat and food for wildlife.

Flora of Death Valley: Resilience in the Desert

Death Valley’s plant life is a testament to survival in extreme conditions. Creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) dominates the landscape with its waxy leaves that conserve moisture and release a resinous scent after rain, making it a keystone species of the Mojave Desert.

Saltbush (Atriplex spp.) and desert holly (Atriplex hymenelytra) thrive in saline soils with silvery-gray foliage that reflects sunlight. Adding a unique touch is Chorizanthe rigida (Rigid Spiny Herb), a low-growing desert annual with spiky textures that play a critical role in stabilizing sandy soils.

At oases like Furnace Creek, date palms and tamarisk trees provide lush shade and habitat for wildlife. Meanwhile, red lava rocks, remnants of ancient volcanic activity, add bold color and texture, a striking feature often used in sustainable landscaping.

Each plant and element tells a story of adaptation, beauty, and endurance, inspiring ideas forgarden designs.

Death Valley Adventures: A Landscape Designer’s Perspective

From Crowley Father Point to the golden waves of Mesquite Dunes, Day 1 ended with dinner at the Furnace Creek Saloon and a peaceful stay at the lush Oasis Ranch, where date palms and tamarisk trees thrive( not native but surviving well)

Day 2 was filled with vibrant and rugged beauty—from the colorful Artists Palette to the towering walls of Golden Canyon at Cathedral Point. We explored the surreal Devil’s Golf Course and capped the day with a breathtaking Badwater Basin sunset which was from far look like ice skating rink ;)

Everywhere we looked, resilient plants like creosote bush, saltbush, and desert holly thrived, showcasing the desert’s adaptability. The striking red lava rocks, remnants of the area’s volcanic past, added dramatic texture to the landscape—an element often used in sustainable gardens for natural mulch and bold accents.

Death Valley’s colors, textures, and ingenuity inspire endless textural design ideas especially the turquoise color of oxidation of Chlorite. What elements would you bring into your garden?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

This holiday season, I’m trading twinkling lights for natural wonders and taking the scenic route to inspiration!
From Central California’s golden valleys to the rugged deserts of the Southwest, and back to the breezy coastal cliffs, this road trip is a journey through California’s most stunning terrains.

Join me as I uncover the stories hidden in the landscapes, from vibrant deserts to lush Mediterranean coastlines. Every day, a new terrain, a fresh perspective, and endless inspiration.

Day 2: Bakersfield to Death Valley
After a late-night arrival in Bakersfield (no pictures except Drilling Rig near Bakersfield from Day 1!), we’re back on the road with the dramatic landscapes of California in our sights. This morning, we’re passing through the Tehachapi Pass, through the land where nothing but oak trees and then the wind turbines create a striking contrast against the rugged hillsides. Further along, my first site of Joshua tree— the Red Rock Canyon State Park greets us with its stunning red cliffs and rock formations.. and wow, the solar power plant in the dessert!! The journey to Death Valley takes us through these remarkable terrains, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure.
