We spoke with members of The PLATO Society of Los Angeles at the Skirball Cultural Center on Los Angeles after the Fires: where are we going and how are we getting there?

Here's a throwback to Esquina Pacoima, our 2021 entry to the Low-Rise: Housing Ideas for Los Angeles Competition.

In response to the challenge to imagine appealing and sustainable new models of low-rise, multi-unit housing, Radar proposed an approach intended to help small-scale property owners develop multi-unit buildings and provide affordable rents.

Esquina Pacoima converts 2 SFR into a total of 9 diversely scaled residential units, a total increase of 7 units. These are pleasant, affordable, scaled appropriately to the neighborhood. There are amenities such as retail, a central green common, and adjacent private patios off ground floor units.

We were proud to earn an Honorable Mention, and proud of what had to say about it, "This project should have been first prize. For LA's working classes housing is about cultural production"

Karina Contreras, Radar Senior Associate, will lead a tour of in Torrance, an adaptive reuse project which took a former big box retail store and raised the roof in order to maximize the interior height for climbing and bouldering. Class 5 is generously offering a complimentary day pass for tour attendees who want to climb.

Jeremy Quinn, Radar Associate Principal, will lead a tour of Supreme in West Hollywood, a subtly complex commercial T/I project on an iconic block of Sunset Blvd. where Radar served as Executive Architect.

Both tours are next Friday May 16th. Learn more and sign up at the link in our bio.

This is such an extraordinarily difficult time for so many across Los Angeles.

We have been heartened to see our industry coming together in order to share resources.

At Radar we are keeping up with City and County conversations regarding process and guidelines. We know fire resiliency strategies through recent work in other California wildfire zones and are expanding upon this experience through continued research. We are learning a lot - quickly - about the technical aspects of rebuilding from colleagues like surveyors, expeditors, and structural engineers.

Helping people and building community has always been at the core of why we do this work. This is our opportunity to be of service. If you or anyone you know is weighing their options, we can offer a free phone consultation, a site visit when the time is right, or to connect you with other necessary professionals. Reach us anytime at [email protected] or 213.617.0075

Sixteen years ago this custom single-family residence in Echo Park was Radar's first ground-up project. Originally designed for close friends, it has been a true joy for the team to follow its evolution through the addition of a gorgeous pool and landscape by Terremoto Landscape. Private grounds sprawl over half an acre, creating a park-like setting totally unique in this highly sought-after neighborhood. The home's layout maximizes connection to the outdoors, which is treated as a series of accompanying rooms. The central breezeway is the spine of the home, oriented to capture the prevailing wind direction and reducing need for artificial cooling.

Good design decisions - carefully considered and timeless - are an investment in the future, creating an ever-appreciating asset.

Radar Associate Principal Jeremy Quinn and our favorite pro photographer Jim Simmons visited a few project sites last week to do some scouting - here are a few preview shots of our project for , Class 5, which is very close to opening in Torrance. Class 5 is an adaptive reuse project, giving a new lease on life to a former big-box store (remember Babys R Us?). We raised the roof to make space for more of the good stuff - including a 40’ lead wall! Watch this space for more photography and follow along  for details around the official opening date.

Everyone at Radar was very pleased to wake up this morning and see this recent project of ours get such careful attention from Lisa Boone and the LA Times. The clients are lovely people, their situation (like that of so many others) is challenging but they had patience and fortitude. We were happy to help.

Worried about housing for her 89-year-old mother after apartment headaches, a Los Angeles teacher built an accessible ADU where she can safely age in place.

05/31/2024

RADAR's pre-approved ADUs are now available online! These Standard Plan sets are available for free to homeowners in El Dorado County, and include structural, MEP engineering, and Title 24. RADAR, Inc. and PlaceWorks were thrilled to work through this project and support the County's efforts to accommodate and accelerate housing needs in its diverse communities. Download the plans and learn more about how to use them to build your ADU in El Dorado County --> https://lnkd.in/eAAjik34

Accessibility is more than doing the minimum required for compliance with legal standards. Disabled access laws are the result of the profound bravery and commitment of activists whose legacy we honor by integrating their revelations into our work. Ingenious and graceful design solutions meet the essential human needs of all users, both with disabilities and without (also known as TABs - the “temporarily able-bodied”).

As such, we're thrilled to share new photos on our web site of this recently completed, ground-up 1-bedroom ADU, located in the northeast LA neighborhood of Lincoln Heights. Originally commissioned during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide a safe place for the client’s mother to age in place, it is informed by universal accessibility principles. The double-gable roof nods to the Victorian-era house in front which dates to the 1880s. Other key features include wide passageways, a moveable kitchen island, curbless shower and lavatory area with room for an attendant when necessary, and a generous floor plan with vaulted ceilings and north-facing skylights.
