The discovery of my muse.

I often get asked where I found my inspiration for this fireplace and the answer is simple: its history.

The house was built in 1907 to Clara Baldwin (daughter of “Lucky Baldwin”) and since then has changed owners over the last decade with each adding their own mark on the home. This fireplace was one of them. Off center, angled with the brick surround freestanding off the wall. (Swipe to see the before)

Instead of tearing it down and starting over, we worked within the nature of what was given and it is a masterpiece of leathered quartzite. This is not your Macabre or Taj Mahal.

This one is in their own catagory of natural beauty of deep marbled turquoise, navy’s and creamy white. It is called “Sea Pearl” provided by

I almost played this room safe. That would have been the easier choice—but not the right one.

For the 2026 Pasadena Showcase House of Design, this room asked for conviction.

When I saw the color at full scale, I hesitated.

But that moment of discomfort is often where the strongest design begins.

On set this week with , speaking about the intention behind the Family Parlor & Vault for

Design, at its core, isn’t just aesthetic—it’s about how a room makes you feel and how people gather within it.

In this case, the goal was intimacy. A space that feels layered, personal, and a little unexpected… while still honoring the history of the home.

Good design feels safe.

For the 2026 Pasadena Showcase House of Design, this was the decision that defined the entire room.

When I first saw Viridian Odyssey by , it felt like an option.

At full scale, I hesitated.

And that hesitation is where the best design lives.

Because creating something truly impactful requires pushing past what feels easy—and trusting the instinct most people ignore.

This is how I design.

One of a kind in every way, this family room is waiting to be discovered. The warmth, edge and traditional collide for an extraordinary experience that I don’t mind admitting I would love to sink into each and every evening. Developed with discretion in mind, a place to relax with those closest to you, partake in conversation, TV and a game of Mahjong. A room defined by family, indeed.

It’s a feeling. You step into the space and it says to you “welcome home”. The emotion fills the room with comfort, retreat, and calm. You feel the shift.

You slip off your shoes, pour a glass of wine and enjoy the view. The linen sofa hugs you, petrified wood surfaces that exude sophistication and practicality underneath warm intentional, layered lighting. The mood is set.

You no longer simply own your house, you are LIVING in your home. Pride, relief and joy have replaced avoidance and stress.

Yes, great design is more than a look, it is a feeling that is waiting for you.

Project Reveal: The HEDGEROW Home

This home was in desperate need of personality and character. As a builder grade home, we wanted to keep the contemporary feel while also adding texture, color, a touch of industrial edge and plenty of seating for this family of five to land.

From rich leathers and soft linens to concrete finishes fireplace and rustic wood beams, this family room is warm yet impressive and a space they can be proud to host friends, family and business associates.

Before and after don’t have to be tear downs, it’s all about layering and space planning. Being intentional with the existing architecture.

If you’re looking for ways to make impactful changes when reimagining your bathroom, disguise the functional into beautiful moments. A great deal of planning and intention was put into this cabinet. His and hers drawer glide hamper with cabinet face panel, decorative millwork lines the back of open shelving for new towels and fresh greenery and cabinet storage above for toiletries. Hint: notice the soffit above that gives this piece a finished “built-in” look.

Proportions that feel right, the open shelves keeps the bathroom feeling open and airy, and the creamy color pops off the wall just enough to add interest yet feels elevated and timeless.
