🪵 We’ve enjoyed diving into some material research for an upcoming project where we are celebrating exposed structural wood. Engaging stains, paints, oils, and other treatments has been a way of preserving color/tone while prolonging the life of the structure.

Finishing touches are being applied at our Project Homekey conversion in Hacienda Heights. In the center of this photo, the mailbox area was designed as a distinct object. The steel structure, the enclosing mailboxes, and the polygal overhead bring the scale of the project down to the hyper functional. Receiving private mail will be a profound, permanent change for the formerly unhoused residents.

Last week at our studio, we hosted the AIA|LA Leaders Breakfast Reception in dialogue with US Representative Laura Friedman. She is an incredible force, advocating for housing production at many scales. Thank you for continuing this series and to all contributors to this important conversation.

Yesterday was National Intern Day and we wanted to share our appreciation for our current crew. These are our plucky interns this summer photographed by some models they’ve made look beautiful! We’re enjoying taking them to OACs, guiding them as they build models/do drawings, and taking them on spontaneous coffee shop runs!

Veiled in scaffolding, one of our permanent supportive housing projects is nearing its façade unveiling.
Captured mid-process, the structure holds its breath—awaiting the reveal of a vibrant stucco palette in yellow, green, and a couple of blues.
Meanwhile, interiors inch toward enclosure. Framed by large windows, the units are beginning to take shape, making way for more sensitive systems and finishes. The dialogue between exterior and interior deepens with each layer—both in construction and in meaning.

We had an out-of-migration-season visitor to our office this morning. This beautiful monarch landed on a model of our upcoming Starlight Bowl project and hung out for a while. We love this collaboration we are a part of along with the vibrant Burbank Community and city leaders.

Despite its weighty concrete construction, our mausoleum at Hollywood Forever Cemetery is quite porous, allowing for the cool, SoCal breeze to flow through the meditative mass. Phase I is now complete and will be a restful place just in time for summer.

In classic L.A. style, our Spanish Revival house remodel plays with expectations of what an L.A. home should be. Instead of leaving it in its historic style, we inserted a layered sequence of outdoor and indoor spaces with a more contemporary language. The result is a home that is equal parts old-style California dreams and new California imaginations.

The exterior corridor at one of our new supportive housing projects is taking shape. In plan, the angled planes provide visual interest and depth while taking advantage of the high, downward slopping site to reveal curated views outward, towards South Los Angeles.

We are in one of our favorite phases on one particular job: the choosing of the final colors. This photo shows our messy process as we solidify the relationships of the spaces that we’ve designed. The scheme will ultimately reflect LA’s vibrancy as it houses the most vulnerable of our city’s population.
