Hardware cloth is officially the devil.

We’ve been working on predator-proofing the chicken run, digging trenches, rolling out wire, attaching it, cutting it, bending it, fighting with it, and questioning every life choice that led us here. 😂

I know it’s worth it because it keeps the flock safer, but wow… this stuff is sharp, stubborn, heavy, awkward, and somehow always fighting back.

That’s all I’m going to say.

I figured if anyone would understand the pain of battling hardware cloth, it would be chicken people. 🥲😂

Tips and tricks needed, please!

My 5-gallon chicken waterer keeps getting heavy algae growth every time I change or refill it, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to prevent it. I clean it out, but it seems like the algae comes right back before long.

For those of you using these larger waterers, what do you do to keep them cleaner? Do you keep them in full shade, add anything safe to the water, clean on a certain schedule, or use a different style of waterer altogether?

I’d love to hear what has worked for everyone, because this thing is driving me crazy.

I’ve seen plenty of people put light fixtures in their chicken coops, but I need to know the secret… how are you keeping the chickens from roosting on them at night? 😂

Mine have already decided this light fixture is the perfect bedtime perch, which is definitely not what I had in mind. I don’t want them sitting up there, p**ping on it, damaging it, or possibly creating a safety issue.

For anyone who has lights in their coop, what do you use to keep birds off of them? Do you cover the fixture, add a guard, hang it differently, or place it somewhere they can’t land?

Also, the ceiling isn’t finished yet, so please ignore that part. I’m just trying to figure out the chicken-versus-light-fixture situation before we get any further.

Any ideas what could have made this hole?

I found it inside/near the chicken run right along the fence line, and I’m trying to figure out whether I should be worried. It looks pretty clean and round, almost like something dug straight down instead of just scratching around.

Has anyone seen a hole like this before? Could it be a snake, chipmunk, rat, mole, ground squirrel, or something else? I’d appreciate any guesses before I start filling it in or trying to predator-proof the area better.

Has anyone ever seen what I can only describe as a “devil chicken”? 😂

This little girl has the wildest look — gray feathers, fluffy head, and those little horn-looking combs that make her look like she came straight from the underworld. We even asked our state chicken guy about her, and he said he’s never seen one like this before.

Now I’m really curious. Is this just a funky breed mix, a genetic quirk, or something specific I’ve never heard of? What exactly is she?

What’s the best way to keep chickens off the porch? I love letting mine free range, but lately they’ve decided the porch is their favorite hangout spot, and now there’s p**p everywhere. 🤦🏽‍♀️

My husband is about ready to lose his mind over it — joking, of course — but I really need a solution. We have 5 acres, so they have plenty of space to wander, yet they keep choosing the porch. Has anyone found a good chicken repellent or trick that actually keeps them away without hurting them? This mess is driving me crazy!

All of my chickens have bare bottoms like this, and I’m trying to figure out what might be causing it. Their feathers are missing around their backsides, and the skin looks really exposed. Has anyone dealt with this before? Could it be molting, mites, feather picking, rooster damage, or something else? I’d appreciate any advice on what to check and how to help them grow their feathers back.

Has anyone else had their home insurance canceled because they keep chickens or waterfowl? We’ve already lost coverage twice since January. The company we had been with for years dropped us because of our birds, so we switched to State Farm — and now they’ve dropped us too, saying it’s because we have older buildings and because we *could* sell eggs.

I’m honestly at a loss. We live on 5 acres out in the middle of nowhere, and this feels completely ridiculous. I don’t know what we’re supposed to do at this point.

I need some advice, chicken people. This white hen belongs to my neighbor, but for the past three nights she has shown up on my back porch and perched on the railing after dark. The last two nights, I put her in my coop so she wouldn’t be easy prey for a predator, but she keeps coming right back to this same spot.

She’s completely exposed out there at night, and I’m worried something is going to get her. What’s the best way to handle this? Should I keep putting her in my coop, talk to the neighbor, or is there a reason she might be choosing my porch every night?

My rooster has started getting aggressive, and today he actually attacked me while I was putting fresh water in the run. I ended up with scratches and bruising on my hand/arm.

I don’t want to get rid of him because I know he’s doing what roosters do and trying to protect his girls, but I also can’t have him coming after me every time I go into the run. For those who have dealt with an aggressive rooster, what actually worked to stop this behavior?
