Kantara: Moroccan Rugs Kantara is a fair trade design business specializing in custom, vintage, and handwoven Moroccan rugs.

Alia Kate founded Kantara in 2008 after falling in love with the art, the design, and the individual women's stories that were woven into each of these unique Moroccan carpets. While living and working in Morocco, she became thoroughly inspired by the tenacity of the women weavers in rural Morocco and by their commitment to a craft that goes back generations and generations. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles between trips to Morocco.

The shop will be closed today, the 4th, in honor of the festivities that start at 10am when Morocco will meet (and beat!) Canada in the round of 16! Inchallah 🤲🏽

And tomorrow, Sunday the 5th, we’ll have limited hours, opening 12-5pm, after the grief circle that we’re hosting with DOE PAORO. Tickets are still available at the link in the bio.

And if you’ll allow me to wax poetic for one tiny moment, the Telemundo commentators said it best last night during the Colombia-Ghana game, when they said we have the World Cup every four years— porque tenemos derecho a la alegría. We have a right to feel this joy.

And for those of us third culture kids out there, the world cup represents a very special type of joy— at seeing countries we’ve lived in and loved competing on the world stage, showing up in all their cultural resonance, and leaving lasting impressions in their wake. For instance will anyone ever forget Cabo Verde after their impressive run??

It’s more than just a game, it’s about national pride, soft power, recognition, and exposure. In 2022 the Atlas Lions captured the world’s attention when they made it to the semifinals, eventually finishing in 4th place. And here we go again. It’s not an easy path, but let’s see if we can go all the way this time!!! 🚀🦁🚀🦁🚀

Los Angeles, let’s come together.  Please join us for our second grief circle, community conversation, meditation, and tea on the East Side.

We are offering this space with the intention of presencing and tending to the concurrent griefs that we find ourselves amidst, both personal and collective. We gather to acknowledge that we are not living through normal times but times of immeasurable sorrows. We are living in the aftermath of a global pandemic, complicit in a 21st century genocide, ongoing ecocide, wars with no end, fascism, ICE detention centers, and a list of horrors beyond just this. To acknowledge these internal and external harms and losses, we turn towards the time-honored practice of finding each other in circle and holding space for what is present amongst us. 

You do not have to have any experience with this kind of gathering to join -  this space is guided and all are welcome. Come light a candle with us.

The primaries are around the corner and vote centers are now open through election day, June 2nd. I used to volunteer as an election clerk and so these topics are near and dear to me 💃🏽

We also used to host Bagels and Ballots brunches to get the ballots figured out in a timely manner, but these days everyone is so busy, so we’ll just drop the resources here. As always, our DMs are open if you have any questions!

Oakland and Mill Valley, get ready! It’s that time of year again, and we’re heading up to the Bay Area from May 15-17 for our annual Kantara x Esqueleto Trunk Show!
