We wrapped up a cabinet project on Monday in Ranchos Palos Verdes. It was a little complicated because the original contractor painted the cabinets with standard water based enamel. No judgement; God knows I made mistakes early on in my career due to inexperience. Luckily the adhesion was sound, but the finish was too soft and the cabinet doors were sticking together as a result. We sanded, primed and finished with ARISTOSHIELD water/oil alkyd. The original contractor also painted oil-based door jambs and baseboards with standard water based enamel; so we stripped them down, primed and repainted properly. The client is a retired construction superintendent who was impressed with our approach and system. His compliments were well-received because we’ve been intentional about providing our clients with both a quality product and overall experience. @ Rancho Palos Verdes, California

The only thing worse than old wallpaper with wainscoting is when they’re USC colors. This home was built in 1941 and many of the surfaces hadn’t been painted in decades; in that sense, this was an interior restoration project. We primed all of the old plaster and trim with Shellac and painted with Regal Select. The wood paneling around the fireplace was restored and we refinished the kitchen and bathroom vanity cabinets. Custom interiors are the most technical, especially older homes like this one. They could be a perfectionist’s nightmare, but we were happy with the final product and the clients are excited for their new home.

Refinishing a deck is an enjoyable process when done correctly. Start by cleaning with a TSP & bleach blend, then apply a wood brightener (oxalic acid). Be sure to thoroughly wet all adjacent surfaces and/or plants before cleaning to avoid any damage. Proper cleaning is the most important part of the process. Cleaning dirt, grime and mildew off of a deck prevents from embedding them into the wood when it comes time to sand. You’ll be surprised how much dirt and grime gets removed. An added benefit is that the cleaning solutions and wood brightener loosens up the existing finish a bit so that the sanding is much easier. Once sanded, shop vac the deck to remove sanding dust. We apply two coats of Super Deck Semi-Transparent Deck Stain with a nice 4” deck brush. Super Deck is a water based product that’s very easy to work with. Keep a wet edge and do one plank at a time, laying it off with as long of a brush stroke as possible. It’s a good idea to wear booties over your shoes in order to keep the deck surface as clean as possible. We completed roughly 7.25 square feet per hour with this process, and the deck turned out beautiful. I recommend by on Facebook if you’re looking to add to your knowledge of the trade. Prepping for the first coat of Spar Varnish. Glass was protected, and the wood was sanded with 100 grit to start, and graduated to 150 and then 180 grit. The doors still get vac’d and tack ragged prior to application.
