Terrain’s Associate Principal, Rani Ranade, is moderating AWA+D’s next Professional Development panel tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11th, from 6pm - 8pm at BASK’s showroom in the Arts District. The panel will provide practical, real-world strategies for students and emerging professionals navigating the transition to professional practice.

“Being an architecture student came naturally to me, but transitioning to an office environment was much more challenging. I couldn’t quite find the sweet spot between confidently voicing my thoughts and ideas while successfully completing work assigned to me by others. I was either too bold or too deferential.” - Rani Ranade

Panelists include Ashley Craig, AIA, Reid Peppard, Ashley Morales Diaz, and Katia Peppas.

We’ve rebranded!

After more than a decade designing high-performance workplaces, adaptive reuse projects, and complex creative environments, we’ve rebranded as Terrain.

Our new name reflects a strategic evolution—a practice that now operates across places, materials, systems, and human behavior, signaling a broader field of operation and work between architecture, strategy, and construction.

Big news! Our plan for the historic Pioneertown Motel site was unanimously approved by the San Bernardino County Planning Commission! We’re grateful to our clients and to the Pioneertown community for their support.

Built originally as a waypost for movie stars of old Westerns, Pioneertown Motel has stood since 1946. Located within the newly created Mane Street National Register Historic District, the project is designed to blend into the historic context. Utilizing earthen and bio-based materials, the project aims to be a model for sustainability and community sensitive design. Located walking distance from Mane Street and Pappy and Harriet’s, the project offers an alternative to the creation of tourist accommodation in undeveloped areas and residential communities. We’re excited to bring this landmark into its next chapter.

Thrilled to announce that BUCK has been recognized as the Jury Winner in the Archello Awards 2025, Office Interior of the Year – Large category! This honor reflects not only the design ambition of the project but also the incredible collaboration behind it.

“Conceived with sustainability at its core, the space was crafted to embody the client’s values at every scale, from material choices and energy-efficient systems to the overall workplace philosophy centered on wellness, creativity, and long-term environmental stewardship. We’re proud to see this vision celebrated on an international platform and grateful to our client and project partners for their trust, insight, and shared commitment to designing a workplace that sets a new standard for thoughtful, future-forward workplaces.” - Ben Loescher, Founding Principal

Yesterday, LMA and an allied group of fire survivors, contractors, advocates and engineers made the case for earthen and bio-based materials in front of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors… and they heard us!

In the wake of the Eaton and Palisades fires, the ongoing consequences of building with high embodied carbon, toxic materials are obvious: carbon emissions from cement production is increasing the intensity and frequency of urban and wildland fires; byproducts of the breakdown and combustion of plastics is polluting our communities, waterways and soil; and the near complete reliance on wood products for residential construction increases fire risk.

Low-processed materials like earth, h**p, and straw offer an alternative, and have enormous potential as fire-resistant, carbon-beneficial construction, and ICC standards already exist for their appropriate use. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with County and State officials to remove unnecessary barriers and make these materials available to all Californians.

WCM Investment Management Office, Denver, CO

“Continuing our relationship with a long-time SoCal client whose operations combine both heads-down work and collaboration, this office was designed with spaces for focused tasks while also encouraging informal meeting and connection. Private offices are organized around central flex spaces which encourage collaboration and socialization.

Located in Denver, the project was executed in an alpine-inspired design and regional material lens; an abundance of wood and a palette of naturally toned colors throughout gives this space a unique identity inspired by its geographic location.”
